I'm surprised/pissed that Karl Dargan didn't make it. He won gold at the Pan Am Games and I liked him alot.
If U have Access to the Cat,Remind him of the Names Mike Tyson,Aaron Pryor,Thomas Hearns & Other GREAT Fighters who NEVER Made an Olympic Team... That's what REED Keeps Telling Charlie Hatley... REED::
On the flipside... I'm GLAD Shawn Porter didn't make it. That guy makes Curtis Stevens look like Sugar Ray Robinson. Porter got KTFO by one shot in the first round of the Pan Am Games. It was highlight reel stuff.
What happened to Danny Jacobs...I can't access usaboxing.com for some reason. Saddam Ali is New York's hope. He's a very good young fighter with a good family around him.
Estrada just knew how to fight Jacobs. He circled and pot shotted him. The weight class was the deepest of them all with I think 6 national champs out of the 8 guys. Ali impressed me, he can adapt to different styles very well. He'll need to impove alot in the next year versus international competition. A NY'r, Bethel, lost in 201+ finals too.. From Suffolk county.. Hatley dominated Melson, but had no answers for Thurman. Neither had much chance beating Andrade, who's very put together and has a chance to be special. Yanez can win gold, as can Warren who is much better than he was in Athens. Warren has some issues, but looked driven clawing his way thru the challenger's bracket. He was not going to be denied. Raynell & Molina are too young without much intl experience to get a medal. Will have to improve alot in CoSprings. Wilder has HUGE upside, IMO. 6'7 frame, without much mass, he could put on some weight over time.. He will benefit alot from the residency program and will make biggest strides. He's only got 25 open fights and never lost. Downs is one of the best stories on the team and one of the best guys. He will be the team leader and that's gonna be a huge plus. He could also medal, has the maturity and will also improve over the next year. Hunter is a great kid, might be ok pro for a little while, but will be hard pressed to qualify and most likely can't compete with the Europeans. Karl and Prof are losers for not making a single day of the Trials.
REED has Only SEEN Demetrius Andrade Fight TWICE,but from What REED Saw & what Most Others have Told REED,Andrade has the PERFECT Ammy Style...More Often than Not,REED has Heard Andrade Compared to Andre Ward... Andrade's QUICK, Looooooooong, a Good "Boxer" & a SOUTHPAW... REED Felt Charles Hatley Should've Turned Pro 4 Years Ago,after Failing to Make the 2004 Team,Because of his STYLE... Hatley LIKES to Exchange (a Bit Tooooooooo Much N REED's Opinion) & NEGLECTS his Jab,Similar to MOST Young Black Fighters N the POST-RJ Era...But the Kid can PUNCH...& his Greatest GIFT is his BODYPUNCHING,which RARELY Gets Acknowledged N Ammy Boxing... REED
Karl and Prof are losers for not making a single day of the Trials.[/quote] Come on Mike, I was going to fight in the 80 trials as the USAF rep at but I broke my 5th metacarpal on my right hand, so it wasn't that big a deal to me, plus you know I had family commitments, and I had to work my second gig Saturday night.
Hatley certainly has a big punch, but he cant take what he dishes out. In slugfests with equal punchers, he gets dropped often. He's not going to have the chin to be a champion pro. The thing is, he can box! But he doesn't ever want to. Given the choice, he'll slug every time. He should have an easy time with guys like Orosco and Thurman. But he gets into wars with them and goes down. In Am's that's ok, get up and be careful, in pros, it could mean lights out.
Yeah,Charlie's Been Hurt a Time or 2,but the Kid has TONS of Heart...The PROBLEM is,when he Gets Hit & HURT,his Instinct is to TRADE...& he's Tooo PROUD to CLINCH,DISengage or Flat-Out RUN when he's Hurt... U Mentioned his APPARENT "Boxing" Ablilities, but Charlie Likes to Go to War,for Better or Worse...REED has Often Told Charlie that he has the MENTALITY of the Stereotypical Mexican Fighter...Growing Up w/ & Sparring w/Mostly Mexican Kids, that's Not Surprising...Charlie's Similar to Sugar Shane Mosley N that Regard... He's a WELL-ADJUSTED,Family Oriented Kid,but N the Ring,he has a bit Tooooooooo Much MACHISMO for his Own Good... The Orozco Fight was PERSONAL...Charlie was ROBBED @ the 2006 State Gloves Against Orozco...N 4-5 Fights Against Each Other, that's THE ONLY Victory Orozco has over Charlie... Their LAST Fight was a Classic,@ the 2007 State Gloves N Ft. Worth...Charlie Got Caught Up N the PRO-Orozco Crowd & SLUGGED it Out w/him...& Having Said that,Charlie DOMINATED the 1st 3 Rounds... Orozco Sucked it Up N the 4th & Got an 8-Count on Charlie, but Charlie Got an 8-Count on Orozco Earlier N the Bout...The Ft. Worth Crowd BOO'ed,but Charlie WON that Bout Clearly... REED ISN'T N the Prediction Business, but REED Guarantee's we'll See Charlie Hatley on HBO or Showtime @ Some Point,N a MEANINGFUL Pro Fight... REED
You think so? I think he has too much of a pro style despite his trainer's efforts to keep him away from pros. The one thing he has going for him is that he could pop...but I don't know if that will make too much of a difference at 135 as it did at 125. He's young too!
I like Ali, but it's pretty established that you can't pick an American to win gold without a world Am title or something like that to back you up. There are just too many good fighters on the world am scene.
Damn. Thanks Reed. I'm pretty down that Jacobs didn't make it. I guess this kid just had his number or was a great big unknown, because his credentials don't come close to Jacobs'. Jacobs is considered by many on the east coast(Mostly New York, but I was never THAT big on him) to be the only superstar-type boxer around.
