The list is from 2007, the same month that Kellerman said 7 of the 10 in question were juicing.

Still. Even sadder still that some are still considered 'relevant' now.

I wasn't aware of a steroid epidemic and I think Kellerman's an idiot and don't pay attention to much of anything he says.

Now, about that Shannon Briggs ranking...

You tell me if he was ranked when Vitali fought him, you're the one reading up on things like that.

Lets look at the heavyweight division from April 1998-using the same source as from where I drew the top 10 of 2007. So its less than 10 years previous but close enough.

1.
2. Lennox Lewis (Britain), 32-1, WBC champ
3. Evander Holyfield, 35-3,WBA/IBF champ
4. Michael Moorer*, 39-2
5. Henry Akinwande (Britain), 33-1-1
6. Ray Mercer, 25-4-1
7. Larry Donald, 31-1-1
8. Michael Grant, 27-0
9. Chris Byrd*, 23-0
10. Andrzej Golota (Poland), 28-3
11. Herbie Hide (Britain), 29-1, WBO champ

We got us 3 names in there minumum that we could say were on steroids. Yet there was no furore back then. Grant, Golota and Holyfield. This is less than 1 year before the unification fight between Lewis and Holyfield. We also have no fewer than 3 fighters who did not debut at Heavyweight who are comfortably competing at heavyweight. 4 if you include Hide, who would subsequently drop down to Cruiserweight. How were they competing on this level so comfortably??

I know where you are going with this... there was no furor because there werent two white guys as champs... suppose there is even one iota of truth to that, it still negates a larger truth... In America, the things that took place in Major League Baseball starting in the early 2000s changed everything and made people here start to really question steroids and how many men were on them... in 1998, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa were, in hindsight, both clearly juiced up to the heavens, but barely anyone was publicly statting any suspicion against them... Now? if a guy started hitting 65 home runs, EVERYBODY would be talking about steroids

the changing times and the new cynicism about performance enhancement has a lot more to do with Kellerman's article than any hatred of white boxers, in my opinion

and I hate Kellerman, I dont feel good defending him

Do you blame the American media for Povetkin's camp using a press conference to raise the "testing" issue with Wladimir?

Kellerman, a guy with his finger on the pulse since childhood, develops a new found cynicism in 2007. What, like an epiphany or something?

Okay, lets look at the division from the early 2000's.....say March 2002.

1: Lennox Lewis (GB), 39-2-1, WBC, IBF, IBO
2: Mike Tyson, 49-3-0-2
3: Wladimir Klitschko (Ukraine), 37-1, WBO
4: Chris Byrd*, 34-2
5: Kirk Johnson (Canada), 32-0-1
6: Hasim Rahman, 35-3
7: Evander Holyfield, 37-5-2
8: John Ruiz, 37-4-1, WBA
9: Vitali Klitschko (Ukraine), 31-1
10: Jameel McCline, 27-2-3

***************

Its probably up to 5 by now, from the 3 of 1998.

I do remember reading an article written by Kellerman around May of 2003 stating that Rahman deserved a shot at the title more than Wladimir, but there was still no mention of steroid.

Its unlikely the American media had anything to do with it- more likely a couple of individuals- chief amongst them Teddy Atlas.

What they could be blamed for is not reporting on the issue with any great fervour once Klitschko had agreed to WADA testing and once Povetkin had run off.

even by 2002-2003, it was still a debate, not necessarily a full-fledged witch hunt... a lot of baseball writers with their finger on the pulse for 40 years weren't saying boo about anybody in 2002... now they are refusing to cast a hall of fame ballot for a guy who hit like 100000 home runs (not that I think it's wrong, he is a cheat after all)

theres just a lot more to it than a simple racial/nationalistic angle

Was Atlas behind Vitali's positive test for steroids as an amateur?

Maybe Wladimir was behind it. Jealous brother and all.

Nope. He simply took general practitioners advice and used rehabilitation supplements which the IOC did not approve.

However, I see the root cause of your chagrin here.
