The Hearns of the Shuler match before the LHW venture. Does that Hearns still get KO'ed or does he win?
History tells us that Barkley seemed to just have Tommy's number... that said, he was on his way to being stopped, particularly with bodyshots when he landed the miracle kayo and I could certainly see an argument made that perhaps he wouldnt have been able to duplicate that given another try or three
Hard to say. Hearns was undoubtedly the better fighter...but with Tommy..you never know if his chin would hold up
Hearns wins by a mile unless Barkely lands another miracle shot out of the blue. To me, the odds are against that.
In all honesty, I thought Old man Hearns won the rematch. And in the first fight Hearns was about half a round from a stoppage before getting caught with a 1 in 100 shot. In 86 I'd pick him without hesitation. Barkley-Hearns I is a closer historical parallel to Lewis-Rahman than say Barrera-Jones or Ali-Norton for my money
in any event..hearns is a MMs favourite...he therefore wins MMs against virtually anyone..even against guys that already beat him two out of two times. ::
, some truth to that but on the flipside, some people think all anyone has to do is lightly slap Hearns and he falls apart, which is of course preposterous
Yep. If Hearns were as fragile as some folks (you know, the folks who know nothing about boxing before 1995) would like to make him out to be, he would have more losses on his record. You know how it goes, because Barkley landed a fight-ending punch out of nowhere while in the middle of getting his ass kicked, that means Hearns would suffer the same fate against anyone else...because that happened so many times in his career...oh, wait...it didn't. Not to mention, the second fight, which took place at the tail end of Hearns' career and was also at Lightheavy, means nothing to a discussion at 160.
Most of the punchers than hearns faced in his career were bombed out before they could test his chin (Duran, Cuevas for example). I don't think Hearns was the most chinny guy...obviously not...but for a great fighter, he had a vulnerable chin.
Good point. Same is true of the great Lennox Lewis. If he were as fragile as many think (we know who they are), he'd have been knocked out many more times.
Absolutely. Lewis suffered a pair of flukey KOs, but his chin didn't fail him often enough during his career for him to have a bad chin. Same goes for Hearns.
You really think Hearns had the same strength chin as Lewis did, P4P? I don't recall hearns being able to take bombs in wars from fighters with equivalent punching power as tyson, Morrison, Mercer, Vitali Klit.
Lewis - Tyson and Lewis - Morrision were "wars"?? In what universe? Let's stick with reality, shall we? Mercer wasn't a big puncher and neither is Vitali. You are overrating both as punchers when you lump them in with Morrison and Tyson. Where are the big KO wins for Mercer? Even the two biggest stoppage wins on his resume were a result of one opponent totally gassing (Morrison) and another one with a flukey nose injury (Damiani). George Foreman he is not. And Vitali is accumulation puncher. Nothing more, nothing less.
