The WBC has declared reigning heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko to be “the greatest puncher ever in the heavyweight division.â€￾
Official WBC Statement: “[Vitali] Klitschko proved that he is the best fighter in the world nowadays, pound for pound, after defeating Juan Carlos Gomez who had a record of 35 knockouts in 44 wins and only 1 loss. Klitschko has outdone all other fighters, no matter what division they belong to. The heavyweight world champion is the only one who can claim he is the greatest champion in the world of boxing as nobody can defeat him. With Vitali´s extraordinary wins, in fights that have been stunning to world fans, showing absolute control and power, our king of the heavyweights has silenced many mouths and media that had unfairly attacked him without any evidence, and been disrespectful to him, considering the great class he is showing. Jose Sulaiman, president of our organization, stated today that Klitschko is the pride the WBC as well as he is the pride of world boxing. Vitlai Klitschko’s record is now: 37 wins; 36 of them by knockout, and including his last win by KO, his percentage in this specialty went up to 97.2%, fact after which Klitschko is placed as the greatest puncher ever in the heavyweight division.â€￾

His brother hits harder. Vitaly is huge and tires his opponents with his size and workrate. But the WBC are just having a man-crush on him.

Naah,.. not 'puncher'... ..it's more of an accumulation of his attributes,... he's 250lbs at a fit weight,.. he's a gigantic man, who has a horses heart and enough physical strength to be as comfortable in his own shell as your average cruiserweight, he's also near 7ft tall,..and rains punches DOWN..on his opponents,... the only assailant who went the distance with him, rivaled his own height,..as did Lennox Lewis, Vitali's power looked far from devistating against these two.

Yeah. He's basically just a strong arm puncher. But when you can throw 70 strong arm punches every round and your opponent can barely hit you back, you're still gonna get a lot of stoppages.

Well if the WBC says it, it MUST be true.

I'm sure the Klitschko huggers and the folks who think boxing was invented in 1986 will be all over this nugget of information.

Couldn't have said it better myself. The size and reach advantages, the main ingredient in both Klitchko's successes.

    Dear WBC,

If we strictly go by percentage of KOs to wins to determine the greatest puncher, we come up with Klitschko's 97.2 KO percentage that you reported. That certainly is a great KO percentage.

But here's a fun fact! 50's and 60's Heavyweight Lamar Clark, and Ali KO victim, had a record of 43 KOs in 44 wins for a KO percentage of 97.7.

Now doesn't that make Clark the greatest puncher ever? Hell....he even knocked out multiple opponents on the same day. Opposition doesn't matter, right? Only the percentage of knockouts to wins, right?

Oh, wait...we really shouldn't claim that Clark is the greatest puncher ever based soley on his KO percentage, should we?? I mean, really...his opposition was hardly great. Even though I know we only need to go by the stats to determine the greatest puncher ever, something doesn't quite feel right about it.

Naming Lamar Clark the greatest puncher ever based soley on his KO percentage would be just be plain irresponsible and self-serving....wouldn't it??

im not saying I agree with it, but the KO percentage is impressive, especially if he continues another 3 years 5 more title fights, etc.

Fuck the Heavyweights! The legendary Billy Fox is LB for LB the greatest puncher of All-Times. 47 KO's in 48 Wins comes to 97.9%.

If only he had fought in the right era and hadn't run into such monsters as Willis Applegate and Dick Wagner we might speak of him in hushed tones like we do Ray Robinson and Roberto Duran.

This is the same WBC whose president-for-life, Jose Sulaiman, recently called the Margarito California banning 'an unfair disgrace' since "Tony is innocent'.':notallthere:

.....a highly embarassing statement using a very short-sighted argument

.....you only have to look at the sanctioning body's rankings to realise that they are full of crap when it comes to putting one fighter above the rest

    Here is the background story.

When Oleg Maskaev defended the WBC belt against Samuel Peter, he was given a split that was against the rules of the WBC. Therefore Oleg in desperate need of any payday he can get threatened to sue the WBC (we all know how well that went for the WBC the last time), so the WBC decided to "bribe" Oleg with a mandatory title defense. Now Vitali klitschko has no interest whatsoever to defend against Oleg Maskaev and has taken the case to the CAS (the highest sports court in Switzerland). The WBC has absolutely no leverage over Vitali Klitschko, since he generates huge sanctioning fees for them and doesn´t need their belt. So now Sulaiman has to feed the ego of Vitali and that was just part of that.

Carry on with the bitching....

If Vitali's KO % ranks him that hight I wonder how they rank Valero at 130 with his perfect KO percentage.

You might laugh at how slow and sloppy giants look,.. but do you know how much that lack of gravity burdenned fluttering, transcends into sheer force?.. ..If Vitali swatted a 250lb arm punch into Marquez's little 130lb skull,...I think only then would you truelly realise how 'spectacular' the strength and power of a heavyweight is,... you ankle-nipping chihuahua :stir: ,..

    who cares?

guy was fortunate enough to be genetically big, good for him, doesnt make him a better fighter

I would figure a "Rules" junkie like yourself would love a classic textbook boxer like JMM

I was just having a little razz with my pet, I own this boy,... but there does seem to be something wrong with calling these sensational biddy little flutterers,.. "REAL WARRIORS"... and the "ONLY FIGHTERS THAT MATTER" while calling the giants "SLOPPY PATHETIC HEARTLESS BITCHES".....when...lol.... a heavyweight... could literally decapitate these midgets,.... I mean,.. fine.. if midgets are the popular choice to watch on the account of thier speed and mobility,.. good,.. ..but the strength and power of heavyweights can be appreciated in equal measure... ..
