Nurses would bring him blankets and a pillow, and he'd lie there, trying to sleep. Most of the time, he failed. His 23-year-old wife, Casey, had just been diagnosed with leukemia, and his mind was spinning. For the first three days, the IBF featherweight champ didn't think about defending his belt. He didn't even bother to train. Casey had to tell him to go ahead and fight, just as he had insisted a few days earlier that she had to go to the hospital. .....
Very nice story. Hopefully some people here will now understand why I went on the way I did last week.
dsimon writes: Thats very touching. On a lot of different levels. One of the reasons I like Cotto is that he comes into the ring with his two kids... who he has raised since being a teenager. It takes a strong warrior to actually be part of a supportive family and do what needs to be done in times of need for a family... even putting aside self interest. I like Miguel because like me... teaching martial arts and weapons tactics on Sundays... I am often cooking and until recently I would be changing the diapers during the course of the week. I can imagine the ruthless brooding Miguel doing the same thing. This poor guy had a devistating thing happen to his wife who he loves, and he has to be strong and do the things that need to be done... God bless him for doing those things. He had to make some changes to do those things and he did. I only wish his wife, his family and him the very best.
