Andre Ward Returns Fine Money To Paul Smith

Smith was due to earn $225,000, according to the California State Athletic Commission contract. However, because Smith was way over the 172-pound contract limit for the non-title fight -- he was 176.4 at Friday’s weigh-in -- he was fined 20 percent of his purse ($45,000), half of which went to Ward and half to the commission.


When the camps negotiated a Saturday morning weight check, they agreed that Smith would pay Ward an additional $5,000 per pound he was above 181 pounds. He was 184.4, costing him another $15,000, which meant the two fines had shrunk his purse to $165,000.



But Ward, who earned $2 million, showed the charitable kind of guy he is after the fight.


According to a source familiar with the transaction, Ward forgave the fines and gave all of the money he was due back to Smith -- $37,500. The commission kept its $22,500 share of Friday’s weigh-in fine. There are not many fighters who would do that.

I'm not even sure he can do this without reporting the income and then having this be a gift to Smith. Which means he'd be liable for the taxes on it. Perhaps he can just disclaim it before it counts as income, but I'd prefer that he get socked with income taxes and a charge against his lifetime gifting amount.

I think the point is, it was sort of Paul's money to start with, so that obviously seemed like the most logical place to give it back to.

When I see that some rich corporation/person giving money is all over the news, I don't see it as charity but as a pr/marketing stunt. Ward, calling himself Son of God, probably agrees too if he ever read the bible (though it wouldn't surprise me if he hasn't, as most professed Christian are clueless to their own religion).

Yep, exactly, he could have gave the money, in secret, to some who are really in need, not a fairly well off guy like Smith who's earning in the last couple of years must be near the million $$$ (and who's money loss was directly his fault). Plus, as Irish noted, had Smith used his size advantage to pull the upset, I think it's pretty safe to say the money wouldn't have been returned. It's simply a pr stunt.

The weight is in the contract, Smith hasn't been the most professional with his weight for a while now. He looked flabby against Abraham even when he made weight. I was shocked he didn't look much worse. But this kind of behavior should result in some kind of penalty. Ah well maybe Ward shitkicking him was enough, i dunno...
