This would be a good fight.

I lean towards Joe slightly because of the hand speed and workrate but Ward would definitely be competitive and give Joe a few bumps and bruises.

    Calzaghe via close UD.

    Andre ward.

Way more intelligent, and fast and crisp enough to counter Joe slappy combo

we'll have to wait and see what ward looks like when he's 40, because calzaghe wouldn't have fought him until he was at least that old

Calzaghe's speed and workrate would earn him a decision. Angry teens have only seen his fights when he was 37 or so, he was even faster in his prime

Yeah he was real fast when he ''beat'' robbed reid. But speed his not everything, and andre (as Reid) has a good enough timing to offset it

I think it'd be a close fight. I'd like to see how Ward fares against a legit southpaw first.

At this point, I'd be inclined to believe that a prime Joe would win it. I think his workrate, and handspeed would be problematic for alot of what Ward tries to do.

Joe wins. Too much to handle for Ward.

I'd be pretty confident of a Calzaghe win tbh.

He has faster hands, an amazing workrate and stamina, rock solid chin, and is very adaptable. I don't think he'd be phased by anything Ward did, he'd adapt within a couple of rounds and slap Ward into bolivian. He has great footwork too, and is good at avoiding clinches and measuring his own range.

Let's not get carried away, Carl Froch as likeable as he is, is not Joe Calzaghe. A completely different sandwich.

Yep, I used to take the piss out of Frock something chronic, calling him a Fighting Farmer etc, I thought he was more or less a British level fighter.

He won me over though, and proved his worth in his win over Pascal.

He is a big time over achiever - he's managed to forge a place for himself amongst today's elite, with what is a pretty minimal amount of talent at elite level.

I guess how Ward handles himself against Bute would give us an idea.

But at the moment, I tend to think that Calzaghe may have just had the answer to Ward's slick skills.

Joe was very good fighting inside, and his hand speed, workrate, stamina, and good chin measure up very well with Ward.

Either way it goes, I think its a competitive fight. But as of now I lean towards Joe as well.

I still don't think Froch was ever very good. I like him for the reasons you listed. Talent wise he is shit at the world level, slow, doesn't punch , etc.

Styles probably favour Joe, but Ward already has a superior resume at 168.

Ward has fought better opponents but Joe would definitely be the best fighter he fought in his career.

It would be an amazing fight I think.

Calzaghe is faster than Ward, which negates pretty much Ward's entire gameplan. Ward would have successes early but he loses a UD.

I saw Joe walk into shots and go down against Hopkins and Jones. I think Ward could time Joe and throw off his rhythm.

It would be an interesting fight but I wouldn't say Joe easily wins or Andre easily wins.

    I'd still pick Ward.

I keep hearing "prime Joe" but when exactly was that? The Charles Brewer years? the Wil McIntyre fights?

It's easy to look great against that level guy. Froch has a better resume than Joe...Ward is close to equalling it 25 fights into his career.

Hopkins and RJJ are a level above Ward. At least a level above. They also both hit hard. Ward punches like a girl. After they both put calzaghe down, they proceeded to lose to Joe.

    So would Ward.

I used to hate Calzaghe so much in the SO days I used to root against him every time he fought, and didn't think he was much good.

I still don't like him now, but I recognise his ability.

You underrate him a lot Hut. Despite being somewhat of a coward, and not much fun to watch either, he has a lot of qualities that make very, very difficult to beat. He's like a better, faster, 168 pound version of Vitali.

I think he's a better fighter than Ward.

Ward is a better infighter and has slightly better defense, in almost all other areas I would give the advantage to Slappy Joe, including some very important ones like speed, power, stamina, and workrate.

Froch would be Calzaghe's best supermiddleweight win.

I'd say convincingly beating the guy who would go on to BEAT Froch when undefeated surpasses it somewhat.

    Nice try though.

You forget to mention Calzaghe adjusting to Hopkins after the KD. He wasn't hurt either, it was a legit KD but also involved a half-shove. The Jones KD was a freak punch, it wasn't even a punch, it was with Roys wrist. That was a sickener one in a million shot, he done well to get up from it to be honest but his head cleared very quickly.

Considering Ward beat that guy too, his overall point stands.
