The gifted and tough Ward moves up to challenge the three time Light Heavyweight Champion, a rugged and hard-hitting southpaw who loves a punch out.

Who wins between these two former Olympians in this barn burner scheduled for 15 rounds?

It REMAINS to Be Seen if Ward is GREAT, but he's Already a Class of Fighter that Marvin Johnson Typically LOST To...Johnson would Probably Be THE TOUGHEST Opponent Ward's Had to Date, but Ward Wins Unanimously...

I disagree that he's already that class... He's good, but I don't see anything that tells me he's as good as the guys Johnson couldn't beat (EMM, Saad, certainly not Spinks)

This is a pick-em to me

Spinks was Still ESTABLISHING Himself when he Beat Johnson Though, Bro...REED VIVIDLY Recalls Watching that Bout...It was Seen as a 50-50, Crossroads Bout, Going In....

Andre Ward of TODAY was More Seasoned than Michael Spinks was, when he KO'ed Marvin Johnson...Ward's a SMART, ATHLETIC Fighter...MORE Athletic than Mustafa, Saad OR Spinks...He'd Pick Johnson Apart & Win a Wide, BORING UD....

I disagree completely... the level of quality he's up against is a molehill compared to a mountain, but we are never going to agree on that one... to me, 80s>now in a HUGE way

let me ask you this, is Ward's shit paid for?

Good fight. I think I might, for the first time ever, pick a contemporary fighter over an 80s fighter, here  I think Ward takes it by a very close decision over 15

I agree... but I don't see him doing much better against the elite of Johnson's time than Marvin himself managed

If forced to pick I'd go with Johnson here, however I wouldn't totally count Ward out. It's like like 55/45 in Johnson's favor.

Ward would do very well at 168 against anyone not named Jones, but at 175, he still has proving to do before he can be picked against someone like Johnson.

Can't see Dre beating a motivated Eddie Mustafa. I think Saad stops him late, while behind on the cards. Definitely can't see him beating Qawi, and the idea of him EVER beating Spinks is outta the question.

I've thought Ward is legit for as long as you have, however I have a gut feeling he's not quite as good as most people think he is now.

To Be Clear, Ward WOULDN'T Have to Be Able to Beat Any of those Guys, to Beat Marvin Johnson....Mustafa, Spinks AND Saad All KO'ed Johnson...Qawi Undoubtedly Would've Also....Against Top Level Guys, Marvin Johnson Got KO'ed...Simple as that...REED Grew Up WATCHING Marvin Johnson Fight; this ISN'T Some Boxrec Bullshit...

REED's Not Sure What LOSING to those Guys (& the Likelihood of Ward Following Suit) Has to/ Do w/Johnson vs. Ward???...Ward's 1 of THE BEST Guys in the ENTIRE Sport, an ELITE Level Fighter...The Type of Guy Marvin Johnson ALWAYS Lost to, by KO, No Less...REED Isn't even Saying Ward KO's Johnson, but the Idea of Ward BEATING him Isn't Far Fetched...

Marvin Johnson was a GATEKEEPER, for that Era....He was the Line of Demarcation btwn the Aforementioned & the Eddie Davis', Victor Galindez's & Yacqui Lopez's...

    Ward UD...

Victor Galindez was a champion before that time and on his last legs when Johnson beat him, so that is not accurate

Yaqui was incredibly unlucky but definitely in Johnson's class

Both of them would beat Tattoos on the likes of Chad Dawson and Carl Froch

Nah, that's Your "Good Ol' Days" BIAS Typing, Bro...REED SAW Victor Galindez & Yacqui Lopez Fight, MANY Times....There was NATHAN Special about Either of them...

Yacqui's Known for Giving Saad 2 Rough Fights, but EVERYBODY Gave Saad Rough Fights....Mike Rossman has Basically Become a PUNCHLINE Around these Parts, yet he BEAT Galindez...Sorry, but there's NATHAN Suggesting Lopez & Galindez "Beat Tattoo's" on Guys like Dawson & Froch...Already, Dawson & Froch have BEATEN BETTER Guys than Galindez or Lopez EVER Did...

Your 80's > Today Ideology ISN'T Absolute, Bro...

Lopez and Galindez would both beat Froch and Dawson. Cdogg is correct about that part.

I don't think I'd pick Lopez over Ward though. Galindez would beat Ward if it's the version of the first Richie Kates fight. That version of Galindez was a fuckin BEAST!

It's cool. I won't heavily disagree on picking Ward over the likes of Lopez/Galindez.

It's not like you said he'd beat Spinks, or Foster.

It's true that overall the talent pool in the 70's/80's was better than it is today, but Cdogg does have a tendency to ALWAYS pick the older generation fighter.

Ward is good enough to COMPETE in any era. He doesn't rule over any era, but he def competes.

It's not like he would lose to a Mike Rossman or something.

Nathan special about Galindez... a two time champion with, what, ten defenses? eleven?

Your "Good New Days" bias is showing

Galindez fought and beat Ahumada (several times), Fourie , Kates (2X), Mustafa Muhammad, Yaqui Lopez (2X) and he beat Rossman in the rematch... he was a tremendous fighter and champion... Every one of those guys was better than Chad Dawson and Carl Froch... he was on the downside and a fat party animal when he lost to Rossman (who is only a punchline because of Smegman, not because he was a bad fighter, he wasnt) and came right back and stopped him to take the title back...

Yaqui Lopez was a well known entity before he ever faced Saad Muhammad, courtesy largely of two close fights with Galindez (who, it appears you forgot was a champ for years and was way past prime when he was losing to guys like Marvin Johnson)

I don't "Always" do anything, but the 70s/80s is fucking light years superior to right now, so inevitably most matchups are going to favor that era

Mike Rossman was a good fighter... There's nothing funny about that statement. He's a "punchline" because of Smegman, it has nothing to do with his actual career
