NEW YORK, NY, August 7 - Is boxing down for the count? Or is it in the midst of a renaissance? Why is it not the mainstream sport it once was? And what are today’s industry leaders doing to ensure its survival? These questions and more will be discussed and debated during a workshop at the 32nd annual National Association of Black Journalists Convention and Career Fair at the Bally’s Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev. http://www.fightbeat.com/news_details.php?NW=2226
Interesting. Maybe King will address how many boxers he's f*cked over too throughout his life! And he wonders why we don't have as many stars as yester-year. They're taking up other sports or probably getting real jobs. Who can blame em?
what i wonder about is exactly how rich "is" don king? if he's truly screwed over as many fighters as he's thought to have (and i'm sure he has), and given that he's been a successful promoter for more than 3 decades, the guy has to be obscenely rich. wouldn't you think? can't the guy get a new jeans jacket? one that hasn't been hand-painted? scratch that. can't the guy wear something other than a jeans jacket? also, i wonder what the sport looks like if guys like Arum, DK and even G are suddenly gone from the scene, and it's run more like a "real" sport. can anyone even imagine?
Well....I don't know if the disappearance of Arum, DK and G would help the sport because it just means that other 'assholes' would take their places. What the sport needs is a 'you know what' overlooking the sport.:: There's no other way for a sport to be run like a real sport. A central body! Teddy Atlas could go on about this for months.
the answer to that - the networks would take over. And we saw how wonderful the sport was doing when HBO decided to cut the middleman and play matchmaker. Boxing enters the recycling business. As far as this topic, I had to laugh when I rec'd this e-mail yesterday. Among the speakers/notable guests mentioned for the Nat'l Assocation of Black Journalists Convention: Ross Greenburg, Ken Hershman and Bob Arum ::
