This thread is not about spitting the title of every film with sword fights, but of those which we were treated to truly great swordmanship from the actors. I am tossing away most of the chinese films because of their heavy use of wires and other effects. So I'll start by mentioning what I consider THE best movie of this genre: Scaramouge (1952) Starring Steward Granger, Eleanor Parker,Janet Leigh and Mel Ferrer. Film itself is a joy to watch. While it has a serious plot it has so many fun scenes that borders in comedy. But when it comes to sword fights is just awesome serious stuff. Steward Granger shows flawless skills as the vengeful Scaramouge. The final duel in the theater in the presence of the whole baffled audience is just pure greatness. Beautiful Eleanor Parker
My number #2 film is 1940's Mark of Zorro starring Tyrone Powell and Basil Rathbone. Their final duel is cinema legend, among the best action sequences ever. Rathbone was in real life a great fencer and Powell trained to look good against the master. Epic sword fight.
My #3 is the 1973 version of The Three Musketeers and its sequel 1974's The Four Musketeers. Since both were filmed simultaneously as a single story I consider it just one single long movie. It has a stellar cast: Michael York as D'Artagnan, Faye Dunaway as MiLady, Charlton Heston as the cardinal Richelieu, Christopher Lee as the baddie Count De Rochefort, Oliver Reed as Athos, Richard Chamberlain as Aramis, Frank Finlay as Porthos, yummy Rachel Welch as Constance and Geraldine Chaplin as the Queen. The action is great, lot of fun. Director Richard Lester hired a fencing master to choreograph the sword fights. The results are in full display in the screen. Great sword fights. Great film. Watch this and then compare it with that not-so great version of the 90's with Keith Sutherland or last year's disastrous version with Milla Jovovich.
Best fencing ? Really ? What's next ? Best ballet scene ? Just skip the b.s panchy and post the "Best scene of a man fucking another man in the ASSSSS"
