Obviously inspired by last week tragedy as it got me wondering if Stevenson was the best fighter ever to get injured (or killed) in a boxing ring (quite a dubious honor) ? The other few top fighters that I can think of are : Gerald McClellan, Beny Kid Paret, Michael Watson, Victor Burgos, Davey Moore and Leavander Johson but they are obviously far more cases. I'm looking for real elite fighters, so don't simply name any decent boxers that got injured/killed (so no Abdusalamov, Kid Akeem, Oscar Diaz) Edit : I added new names to the list
Just remembered that Leavander Johson was killed in his fight vs Jesus Chavez though I'm not sure he qualifies as, even though he was a world champion, he wasn't elite. Paul Ingle fall in the same category too. Probably the one who made the best recovery though.
I think we're talking about guys who suffered permanent brain damage, but lived. I think the answer to this question is probably McClellan.
I'm looking for both cases (if a mod could change the thread title it would be greatly appreciated). From the top of my head, it's definitively a 2 horses race between Paret and Stevenson (McClellan simply didn't accomplish enough), but theses two are fairly recent, they've got to be other instances (and Just find one in Davey Moore, a former featherweight champ from the 50's)
Yeah, Davey Moore was a good fighter and had reigned as featherweight champ for a few years before he ran into Sugar Ramos. The fight was competitive throughout, but Ramos proved too strong for Moore down the stretch, and in the 10th round a beaten up Moore finally went down, and when he went down he hit the base of his neck on the bottom rope, which is what lead to his death a few days later. Moore's definitely one of the best fighters to ever get killed in the ring.
Moore-Ramos is tough to watch because even though it was a brutal war, the two were touching gloves at the end of each round, and obviously had a lot of mutual respect for eachother. Just from those gestures, Moore seemed like a honorable fighter. He didn't take the type of beating that kills guys, it's just the freak occurrence of landing in the wrong place when he went down that killed him. Very sad. I would recommend watching that fight at least once though. Truly one of the all time best featherweight wars.
I think what Azazel is getting at is the best fighter to become a veg as the result of ONE fight. In other words, guys who passed out and had to be rushed in for emergency surgery due to brain bleeds. That never happened to Ali. For Ali, it was an accumulation of all the beatings he took throughout the 70s. Also, Ali never actually became a vegetable. Mentally, he was still there. It was his body that slowly failed him. Ali shoulda retired after The Thrilla.
It’s funny the lengths the Canada twins will go to to put Stevenson on top of a list. “I think he’s the best Haitian Quebec City vegetable to ever lace them up. Discuss”
In Finland Moore has a special place as he was the champion when the first and so far only Finnish guy fought for a championship. He was a total gentleman, and very respectful
Yeah, cause I'm known to be a huge Stevenson fan Pathetic how this forum has simply become a non stop bitchfest
