Leaving aside accomplishments & going just with your eyes and your opinions who do you think are the 5 best fighters in the sport today? For me (leaving aside Floyd who doesn't fight anymore and would probably be number 3) - 1) Pacquiao 2) Donaire 3) Martinez 4) Bute 5) Pirog Ok, you go.
No specific order Pacquiao Martinez Froch Donaire Nishioka JMM Fuck it i'm having a top 6, can't leave out JMM .
If he beats Bradley then he must be considered at least. I wouldn't have him top 5 right now though. 1. Pacquiao 2. Floyd 3. Donaire 4. Martinez 5. Vitali If Floyd doesn't count then Marquez
I'm gonna be controversial and amend my list (remember based merely on opinion & my eyes) 1) Pac 2) Donaire 3) Martinez 4) Bute. 5) Pirog Pirog & Bute are obviously still '?'s, but i think they're the absolute goods. Bute, De Gale, Froch & Ward could prove to be an absolute golden age of super middleweights in the next few years. *edit* If Pirog & Martinez join them you're looking at one of the most exciting divisions in the entire history of the sport. Ever.
I was very impressed with Nishioka when I saw him against Munroe, so i'll add him to my list. Can't believe I forgot to add Froch, so I swapped him with Marquez despite the fact Marquez is excellent.
Alvarez could very well prove to be one for the list, maybe not from seeing him against Matthew Hatton, but against better quality opponents, if he proves to be successful.
I agree, think I made a thread on it a while back, 160-175 has a golden age coming up. People talk about boxing dying but there is a serious depth of talent coming up between these weight classes. Saying that, though I'd like him to stick around, I think Froch will have maybe a couple of fights after the super six and call it a day. I'd love to see him and Chunky fight in the future but I doubt it will happen.
Nishioka is class, I was considering him too but I've only seen his fights with Munroe and Gonzales. Need to see more of him.
True, respect to Munroe for his efforts, but he was out of his depth. Nishioka is defending his title against Mauricio Javier Munoz, in April. One to keep an eye out for. Ever seen Munoz fight?
Having seen a couple of Montiel and Donaire fights before their respective fight, I was so surprised by the knockout so early. Both fighters are great, but for Donaire to win in that fashion, against a top quality opponent definitely puts him up there in the best fighters list and P4P rankings.
Marquez is 37 and two weights past his best. And FWIW I replaced Vitali with Lucian Bute. Marquez would still certainly be number 7, at least.
I don't know how you can discount Mayweather, honestly. He's the current Welterweight Champion of the world --- that makes him eligible enough for me.
Yeah, but it's 99.9999% likely that his next fight (if there's a next one) will come well over a year since his last one. And he's only had two fights in the past 3+ years. Kind of tough to judge what you don't get to see.
Because he's going to jail and generally shows no inclination of ever fighting again. Fuck Floyd Mayweather I'm sick of the sight and sound of his name. He's like a hot chick you wanna rhumba but keeps making you wait. At a certain point you just get deadly bored.
Froch's a weird choice for this thread, since it's asked to ignore accomplishments. His style lends to people picking against him more often than not, which makes his deserved lofty ranking (I have him #2 at SMW) almost exclusively based on accomplishments. It's for that same reason that I wouldn't rate Tim Bradley, who I actually have in my own P4P rankings. Anyway, my own top five: 1) Donaire - and I've felt this way long before Feb. 19 2) Pacquiao - goes without saying. 3) Martinez - can never give Tam Tam enough credit for planting the seed long before everyone else began to believe 4) Vitali - not a more dominant heavyweight on the planet, including his brother 5) Marquez - even in the twilight, still manages to rule LW with conviction
i know we dont count small guys, but as far as skills and power is concerned, roman gonzalez is a fucking beast. he would put a seriously hurting on calderon and i'd also pick him to beat segura at 112.
Final amended list 1) Pac 2) Donaire 3) Bute 4) Martinez 5) Pirog 6) Marquez 7) Vitali 8) Dawson 9) Ward T) Montiel
I don't know why, but I'm not sold on Gonzalez. I don't know if it's him specifically or the hype surrounding him, but for some reason I've yet to see what everyone sees in him.
he has very heavy hands to start off with. he also has a large frame considering his weight. not the fastest guy at his weight, but certainly hits the hardest and his reach should be too much for all of the little guys imo.
I don't know if he hits the hardest, though it's also in line with my disagreement that he's too much for Segura. If anything, I believe the opposite to be true. I've only seen five of his fights - his pair with Rosas, the title win over Niida, a decision win over that Japanese cat that just fought to a draw with Joyi last month, and one other guy on a fight that was on Televisa. So, maybe I'm not the best judge, but I'm pretty sure that cluster of fights makes up the heart of his resume against live competition. And I can't say that beyond the Niida fight, I was ever really blown away with what I was seeing, not enough to consider him P4P or anything.
