This movie pretty much invented MMA. I can watch it over and over again. Yeah the writer was full of shit in "telling his own story" but it turned out to be a classic.
It had potential but lost me at the end with all of the blinded by mystery powder bullshit. There was no need for that.
Awesome film. I prefer the Frank Dux character to Kurt Sloane. Chong Li is just badass and Ray Jackson is hilarious.
Sure...BUT the point is...it was building to to a very good fight...without him having to cheat. The cheating just made it seem that Van Damme was so much better than him that even though handicapped with temporary blindness he could still beat him. That's not a satisfying ending at all. It should have been an evenly matched fight at the end....without needing to add in any bullshit.
The mystery powder scene didn't put me off. In fact, it's arguably the most iconic moment from the film.
It's classic. The bad guy/bully is getting shown up by the better man so he decides to do the cuntish thing and try to blind his opponent, like Liston-Clay.
I liked all the different styles of fighting on display, like the dude from Africa, the sumo guy who crushed his back.
Yeah but surely you see my point? That's lazy writing. Why not have the bad guy be fairly evenly matched with the "hero" and the hero wins because of some great maneuver or something? What is so satisfying about seeing the BIG BAD so easily outclassed by the hero that he has to cheat to stand a chance and even then gets badly beaten? Perhaps most people don't think like me.
I see your point. Did you not like it when Van Damme had to regain his composure and senses about him, then the flashbacks? That was cool I thought and I loved the music in that scene.
Worst bit of the film for me was the guy rolling around on the floor like a crazy animal. That was just weird. I was like what the fuck is this shit . I had to laugh.
Did you know that Mortal Kombat was actually created as a Van Damme video game in the Mike Tyson's Punchout vein, but he pulled out of the project? They went with their own characters and the rest is history.
