Man.. I just watched the fight again (for maybe the 20th time) it is one of my all time favorites! What a FIGHT! Bowe was 37-1 with 31 ko's going in Holy was 31-2 with 22 ko's Great great fight beginning of the 5 round the docs were in Holy's corner, looking him over, making sure he was breathing ok.. it was a rough fight! 6 round Holy comes out BLAZING and DROPS Big Daddy! (for the first time in his career) 7 round was back and forth with Big daddy getting the better and finally wearing down and Dropping Holy FACE FIRST! First man to KO Holy! Dam what a fight!! Bowe really could have been great!

Great post!:bears: I think the punishment Bowe suffered in this fight greatly contributed to his current condition.
All 3 fights were awesome! They showed the second fight last week on Classic, I had forgotten how much of a war that fight was. It was even better than the first!
Great fight but it doesn't tell the entire story. Holyfield entered that fight with the flu...and that is the ONLY reason why Bowe won. When Evander had him OUT on his feet in the fifth..any version of Evander that was healthy would have finished him there and then. Fuck Bowe.
Oh...I see....Evander was healthy enuff to batter him to the brink, but not healthy enough to finish him. That makes like, books-full of sense.:dunno: :nono:
Did you even watch the fight? It's apparent that Evander wasn't himself that night. He fought in quick spurts here and there but didn't have ANY stamina in that fight (and he was KNOWN for his stamina). And he didn't "batter him to the brink"..he landed a single left hook, FLUSH on the point of the chin and Bowe fell like a chopped tree. Evander then "laboured" after him and virtually gave up the assault on a DEFENSLESS Bowe..because he didn't have the energy to finish him. I saw the fight live and I was SCREAMING at the TV for Evander to finish him off..but Holy just didn't have it that night. After the fight we find out that he had the flu...and it all made sense.
HE always had the flu...or a prophet said something.....him and Yory Boy Campas should hook up, Queens of Horseshit that they are. He had a "VIRUS" when he "drew" with Lewis, he had the "Flu" when he lost to Bowe, he had a heart murmur when he lost to Moorer. { }. He was "robbed" in the rematch with Lewis. They "bullied" him into retirement when he couldn't beat Donalds. I mean.........it gets to be a bit much.
Can't comment on the rest of your post (or categorically refuse to....pick one )...but it was CLEAR that Evander was sick that night. He was GASSED after 2 rounds for heaven's sake!! This is EVANDER...a man that can throw 80 punches a round for 15 rounds. OBVIOUSLY..he wasn't right. If he were..BOWE, who was OUT ON HIS FEET with 2 minutes left in the round.....would have been destroyed...
I don't know how much punches Evander threw in the Dokes, Cooper, etc..fights but I'm sure it was a hell of a lot PER ROUND compared with most Heavyweights.
Stop being pedantic. Forget the letter of the law and look at the spirit of the law. My point is that Evander was known for his workrate and stamina. Are you now going to object to this? If not..shut the f*ck up!!:tease:
:bears: staff's really bringing the goods in this debate!!!!! Holyfield was a hard-working warrior. Very uncharacteristic to see him throw a low percentage of punches. Indeed, he was unwell in the rubber match.
Holyfield always had some ailment. First it was shoulder injury, then it was a heart attack against Moorer. First he was tired from body shots against Bowe, then it was Hepatitis B. Then there was more ailments against Czyz, his leg cramps against Lewis, busted eardrum versus Ruiz, etc... Manny Steward said Holyfield was doing too much lifting and not enough roadwork and sparring. Holyfield's stamina and health issues may have been a case of "too much HGH-itis"
Yeah, this was a rare case where ALL 3 bouts were excellent fights. It may have lacked the popularity and impact of an Ali-Frazier, but for pure action, it was more consistent because Ali-Frazier II was a stinker.
Maybe he was full of excuses in some fights...but anyone who watched Holyfield-Bowe live could tell from the first round that Evander wasn't right. He was BLOWING early in that fight (well before he knocked Bowe down)..very uncharacteristic of the man at that time.
Bowe got lucky in that fight. The punch that did holyfield in was a lame punch, he even closed his eyes.
GTFOH w/ that. Ali-Frazier 3 was the best of the bunch, but for pure action, it's the Bowe-Holy trilogy by a mile. Frazier-Ali I was a major, even historical, event, but not even that great of a fight.
GTFOH w/that...back at ya!! :eeeek: Frazier-Ali I not even that great of a fight???? THIS IS MADNESS!!
It was a good fight, but dominated by Frazier. The 3rd one was the best of the trilogy, the 2nd being the least watchable (in fact, once being enough). None of three completely wipe out any parts of the Bowe-Holy trilogy, never mind as a whole (though I'm pretending for a moment you just meant it as a joke). All three fights had just about everything you can ask for in a heavyweight prize fight, and this even with Riddick showing up grossly out of shape for the second fight.
it is absurd to say Holy "had the flu" come on.. He clipped Bowe on the chin and Bowe recovered and it was an awesome fight! To say he was sick is ridiculous
Holyfield looked bad, but he also looked bad against Moorer the first time, his first case of too-much-HGH-itis. Holyfield always gets excuses for his losses and poor performances. If Bowe doesn't get credit for stopping a less-than-100% Holyfield, then Holyfield shouldn't get credit for winning a razor thin decision over an overweight Bowe. Can you imagine the excuses Holyfield would get if he lost his title on a razor thin decision in which he was having a good round (after a bad previous 2) and then some idiot hang-gliding delayed the fight for 20 minutes? And he ended up losing that round, and lost the decision by 1 and 2 pts on the cards? And his pregnant wife was taken from the arena on a stretcher because she fainted?
I dont know about years off "his life" but he did seem to damage Bowe.. but.. Bowe was his own worse enemy, I think Bowe had Potential (and Eddie Futch did as well) to be one of the best Heavys in history
yep. thanks for reminding me why I've never liked him (though I didn't like him even when he was undefeated and NOT making excuses)
