I'm not sure I've ever seen such a sharp U turn on a fighter as Broner.

After the Ponce fight half of the board was all "Broner sucks, and is really boring, I hope I don't ever see him on TV again" etc.

Now after crushing a couple of undersized scrubs, everyone on the board thinks he's an elite fighter, and would beat Gamboa :notallthere:

Fucking weird. It's more common for people to hop off wagons, but I don't think I've ever heard a guy get talked about as an elite fighter after whupping a couple of scrubs.

Incidentally, how tall do you think Broner's dad is, 5'1?

I refuse to believe he is his biological father. Imagine starting a fight with Broners pop at the checkout over the maximum-items quota at the express counter, and then getting laid out by a 300lb 5'1" guy who has blazing handspeed and adequate pop?? I'd be using the old Cus D'Amato trick, staring at his chest, waiting for his tits to jiggle, then trying to slip his fat-hands.

Broner is still a bit green, obviously. But thats to be expected at 22.

Gamboa really didn't look too great against Ponce either so I don't put too much stock in that. Ironically, Juanma looked better than both of them against Ponce.

But Broner is the future of those divisions IMO.

He is a Floyd copycat, and I wasn't sold on him initially, but the few fights I've seen him in he has looked very good. The opposition wasn't up to much and I haven't seen the Ponce fight but so far I've been impressed.

It is ironic I agree. I think he caught Ponce cold. A rematch would be pretty different I bet.

But really, Gamboa didn't look great but still won nearly every round, and Broner should have lost. Big difference.

I have an open mind about Broner, I'm just amazed that people are already quick to think he'd beat someone like Gamboa who is easily one of the 10 best fighters in the sport.

Well that's how I feel, but it seems everyone else seems to think he's an elite fighter already and would beat Gamboa, it's weird :dunno:

It's easy to get caught up with someone looking awesome crushing scrubs, but how many times have we seen those same fighters look ordinary when faced with legit fighters, especially legit fighters their own size.

He might turn out to be super elite, who knows, but I just think he's WAY too unproven to be talking about him as an elite fighter.

Not me. I blasted him in real time on this BOARD. He was at least 2 divsions bigger than that poor Mexican he slaughtered. Broner is a typical "hippity hop" fighter. All style and no substance. I THINK nothing of him.

So far it's just me, ILLU and Ike that are on the "Broner is just a hippety hop Floyd impersonator" bandwagon. Anyone else?

Also Ike, how come your writing style has become infused with Fighter's?

Good question. He's the bigger guy, and won't be as easy to find as I expect Rios will prove to be, it's impossible to say to be honest. I'm not one to just pick the fighter who has proven himself to be elite world class over an unproven guy who hasn't, just because of that one fact alone. There's so many intangibles such as size, style etc that come into play as well. Gamboa has his big test coming up, if he wins that one in impressive fashion then maybe I'd say yeah he wins, and as I said I haven't seen the Broner-Ponce fight so I can only go off what I've seen, and he's looked impressive to me against sub-par opposition. If he fought Gamboa it might prove to be his coming out fight, I just need to see more of him before I can give an honest assesment.

Broner has change his style to that of Mayweather

    Broner earlier in his career...

Now copying Mayweather jr. he has IMO better his style, he doesn't get hit as much and seems more calm in the ring when countering. Or maybe he is yet to be push as a fighter.

Yeah, you can definitely notice the change in his style from the Willy fight to the Perez fight. His body positioning has changed and the way he chooses to pick his shots.

I don't see any resemblance. Broner is OK. But he's suddenly become a name, and we all know what the impetus behind that suddenness is. Floyd on the other hand was a slow burner- at one point it was felt that Mosley would destroy him if they ever met- this was when Floyd was at 130 and Shane was at 135. Now its open to debate whether the 147 version of Shane, the Balco Shane, could have even beaten Floyd at 147, much less destroyed him.

Broner is decent, but unproven. The hype behind him is as much derived from the necessity to invent a hero in barren times as it is from any innate, perennial talent on his behalf.

What do you mean? My keyboard is a little broken and I am on about 3 different pain pills right now. I am really out of my mind lately. I can't believe they let me work. I can barely speak.I hurt my back and a doctor hooked me up. I would be lying if I said I have followed his orders. I think I have tripled the dosage.

I wouldn't call it a u turn but Broner has grown on me a little.

I remember when I saw him about a year ago I though he was too cocky for what little he had done.

Now I really started seeing his skills and his all around arsenal and I think he is a pretty complete fighter. It is just a matter of how good he will be.

I think some look too much into the Ponce fight. I think in a rematch Broner would beat him by a wide margin.

People compare how much talented Gamboa is. But Gamboa has been on the canvas against mediocre competition around 4 times that I can remember.

I think win or lose after the Rios fight, GAmboa will drop down to 130 and the fight with Broner will become the priority.
