@Flo-Raiden @Tin_Ribs @Xplosive You three might well wanna see this, to my knowledge, this much of the fight didn't even exist, so I'm very stoked! I do love
I've seen it already . I had Ortiz-Laguna I, and III on VHS. My VHS collection was pretty extensive, but when I moved to a new house two years ago I boxed all of them up, and they're still in my basement. With most shit being on YouTube anyway, I haven't felt the need to retrieve them. However, it's been awhile since I've watched it. Maybe like 10-12 years. I might give it a rewatch tonight. From what I remember, Carlos beat Laguna in the third fight in dominant fashion.
There's no way to tell what's available on youtube without searching first but maybe go through your stuff and pick out what you believe is likely to be the rarest. Then if it's not on yt upload it.
Just come out and say it whiskey, you want him to upload his rare smoke gainer early pro fights, training footage and family reunion footage video archive
Actually I’ve seen that on YouTube years ago. There’s a video of it that had the WRONG description by saying it was the first fight when it was in fact the third fight. Good find though! Its been awhile since I’ve seen it but from what I remembered Ortiz pretty much controlled the entire fight. Hoping someone can find a video of the second fight. Very underrated rivalry between two ATGs. Here’s the Ortiz vs Laguna 3 with Don Dunphys commentary.
Yup! That is the third fight! Ortiz-Battling Torres is also on YT and I watch it often. ChrisJS uploaded that one:
Carlos was really one of the most versatile fighters ever. I maintain that he beats Chavez at 135. Outboxing him from the outside, and matching him inside when has to.
Ortiz is one of the best LWs ever, no doubt. His résumé is insane, I was incredibly surprised to see that he only beat two top 50 LWs by my count. So versatile, very strong and workman-like. He's like Monzon, in that he was so good a ring general, that his style is hard to appreciate, visually. Although that Torres fight is very watchable. Loved that one. Honestly, I think Laguna beats Chavez, let alone Ortiz. I'll be watching this one tonight.
Agreed with that. I honestly think Ortiz would have been able to figure out Chavez and outfight him on any range, and that includes inside as well. Ortiz was that good. I'll even go as far as to say that he makes it very competitive with Whitaker, probably grabbing at least one win against him in a trilogy.
I think he loses to Whitaker, but definitely not an easy fight for Pea. Same with Duran - Ortiz loses, but keeps it competitive, probably until the late rounds, where I think Duran really takes command.
Ortiz has a helluva resume for sure. Especially given that he wasn't the fastest or hardest puncher but was incredibly resourceful and smart in the ring. Don't forget that he also should have gotten a convincing win against Nicolino Locche but was given a Draw to the hometown fighter. Imagine how much better his resume would look if he got an official win from Locche.
Not to mention, by all accounts, he should be undefeated through his first 50 fights. Three wins over Loi would be huge.
Supposedly he didn't care much because it was a non-title fight. He was more focused on taking the title from Brown. I don't think there's any question, in a neutral setting, Ortiz was just better than Locche.
Almost forgot about Loi. Ortiz got 1 win from him but it really should have been 2 or even all 3 fights. What also makes Ortiz a great fighter was his willingness to fight fighters in their hometown. Just a shame that he was unlucky in some of them in fights that should have gone to his favor.
Yes I remember that. Ortiz didn't think too much about the decision since there was no title on the line. I wish there was a full video of Ortiz vs Locche. Locche was a great defensive fighter but he was the kind of fighter that benefitted a lot from fighting mostly in his hometown (excluding Fuji) and got away with fighting negative.
To Locche's credit, he didn't fight negative at all against Hernandez. He actually showed pockets of aggression after getting dropped, and really countered the Hell outta Hernandez.
Word on the street is that Xplosive has pristine copies of both Greb-Walker and Greb-Tunney. Extremely selfish not to share them with the boxing world.
Seems that by the 3rd fight, Ortiz had Laguna's style figured out. Does anyone know if any footage exists of the 2nd fight?
That was a great fight, almost forgot about that one. Locche really showed some heart and aggression in that one, especially against a puncher like Hernandez. I don't remember any other fights from him where he let his hands go.
Just a general tip that you should search fighters in their native language for better content, rare stuff and high quality. This in particular applies to Mexican, Japanese and Korean Boxers, but is useful for all of them.
Every time I watch Ortiz, I feel sort of stupid. For years I had intended to watch him but, in the old days of buying tapes from ads in the back of Ring, I never got around to it. Last year I did and I love watching him. I like fighters that are all around good, but not great at any physical aspect of the game, but know how to fight. I have to credit George and RD for inspiring me to finally watch Ortiz, and for my renewed interest in Miguel Canto.
