what the fuck is it with that cunt Thomas Gerbasi http://www.ufc.com/index.cfm?fa=news.detail&gid=20895
I'm a fan of MMA but I'm much more of a fan of boxing. I just don't get the argument that one sport has to "replace" the other. They are two entirely different combat sports, and boxing has been around a lot longer.
I like MMA outgrowing boxing for a while, because it will force boxing into a shrinking health process, while MMA has to deal with all the problems that boxing faced, when everybody wanted his piece of the big pie.
MMA has room to grow....but they will have to get organize like the NFL, NBA, etc....w/ College Wrestlers, martial artist, etc...they can develop into something big..... but as of right now....MMA is 80% UFC....one company is whats keeping it alive IMO...they are doing a hell of a job......
There'll always be a market for a combat sport where the combatants don't spend 25% of the time rubbing their crotches over each other. :bears:
I stopped watching UFC ages ago when they started putting Royce Gracie against the mastodons sons of Goliath.
::::Hell of a job? The joke organization has a champion that is 2-1. MMA is a fad for tough and unathletic white trash who think tattoos and spandex make them warriors. Fuck the UFC and MMA. It is a fad and it is awful.
>>“There’s a certain kind of honor and integrity with the fighters, and these guys are machines. I don’t think Kobe Bryant could go three five minute rounds.â€<< I think the writer also forgot to mention that Kobe makes more money in a single game than half the UFC roster will make in a year. :: Furthermore, Kobe doesn't have to fear for his job after a bad game whereas most everybody in the UFC has to impress the boss just in hopes of getting called back for another fight. And what's worse, 2 losses in the UFC and you're basically fired. 2 losses for Kobe Bryant means f*ck all. This article is pretty crappy. And I disagree that the guys in the UFC are machines. Many of them are just trying to feed their families and really aren't paid well at all. And the majority of them, as FreeIke said, are indeed basically white trash high school dropouts with no other avenue to make a living other than bouncing in a bar or working in a car wash. Their jobs are to get their skulls smashed in for my enjoyment. The more blood...the better!
This may be true at the lower levels of the organization, but the top fighters in their respected classes have all been practicing a combat sport discipline for most of their lives have become very good at it, and just want to make a living of it. High school drop out or not, it is the avenue that they chose. Most athletes are worthless outside of their work in sports anyways.
That's just it though. Whether many of the top fighters have been practicing all their lives or not means f*ck all to the boss if you don't get a positive crowd reaction. Otherwise you're as dead as Jake O Brian...the poor f*cker who did martial arts all his life but just wasn't popular for his wet blanket style and hence is out of a job. Let's be real. The UFC is a business and business means putting asses in seats. Nobody cares what your background is or how long you've been studying martial arts. The crowd sure doesn't care. All this time....and still the fans are as ignorant towards the sport as they were 5 years ago. It's a drunks favourite pastime...to see a couple of tatooed rednecks smashing eachother bloody. "JUST BLEED!!!!!!!!!" :bears:
You seriously think that this is just an MMA phenomenon?? A large portion of viewers watch many sports just to see punishment. Some watch football to see the big hits, hockey for the checks and fights, boxing for the KO's, and auto racing for the crashes. Obviously many fans enjoy the skill and competition involved, but there is always that large portion in many audiences that love to witness the brutal side of any particular sport.
I watch MLB hoping to see the pitcher smash the batter in the face with the ball. Just doesn't happen often enough.
Dana White and UFC have done a hell of job....they have taken a lil company and made it into the premiere organization in their sport....and it is a FAD and IMO will never be as popular as it is right now.... 2-1 champ is a smart move by the UFC....that guy bring it another type of fan that UFC probably didn't have before...the pro wrestling crowd....
i watch every ufc, strikeforce, dream, etc. but for me MMA died with PRIDE. i used to be a big fan of both, but i do not like the rules in ufc. it has turned into wrestling-boxing. people are too greased up and slick to get subbed, cant kick or knee on the ground or people on the ground. people talk about how "hardcore" it is...but like boxing it also does not resemble a street fight. i still love the sport, but its starting to slow down IMO
UFC's fanbase is made up of ex-wrestling fans. They followed WWE's business model spot on and picked up people who grew out of wwe.
Not really. I know a shit load of MMA fans and not a single one of them has EVER been a fan of fake ass wrestling. They are however ALL boxing fans.
i used to train in mixed martial arts and go to shows, train with guys who fought on shows, etc. there are ALOT of douchebag boxing haters in every audience, AND every gym. jiu jitsu instructors and wrestlers everywhere are out talking shit about boxing for no apparent reason. there are alot of knowledgeable boxing/mma fans...but alot of retards too.
Dana White doesn't really hate boxing he just disrespects it for his own financial gain in my opinion. The guy used to be an amateur boxer and trainer. However, he is so hell bent on promoting his brand that he'll use boxing to promote it. The problem is, it seems to have a trickle down effect into the MMA community. I can understand why White does it for a advertising angle, but the fact that other martial artists are doing it is ridiculous. It really says something that boxing media doesn't do it, because its really not needed. For all intents and purposes MMA is the UFC at this point. I don't really think the other organizations are making very much money and the fighters in UFC are criminally underpaid for the amount of punishment they take.
A lot of the fighters who talk sh*t about boxing are also training in boxing. You won't be a successful MMA fighter without boxing. Even Fedor the Great said: Boxing and Wrestling...the 2 most important styles for success in MMA. And on youtube you see Anderson Silva and Minotauro Noguira in a rugged 6 round boxing match beating the tar out of eachother. Few people seem to realize just how important boxing is.
The boxing media doesn't do it? You can't be serious. Most people I know who are fans, are fans of both sports. But usually it's the vocal minority that gets heard. Like in most aspects of life, nobody cares about the positive, but the negative is newsworthy. I mean, nobody gives a rat's ass when Max Kellerman says he loves MMA, but when Larry Merchant blasts MMA, it's news. When Jens Pulver says Tim Sylvia is crazy for wanting to fight Ray Mercer, it barely gets any press. But when an MMA fighter calls out a boxer, or vice versa, it's all over the message boards. I read the article that was posted, and it's just a puff piece, the UFC name dropping a few celebrities to toot it's own horn. Certainly nothing worth getting angry about. TFK
I stopped watching MMA fights a long time ago. I got tired of watching some dude on top of some other dude like some fucking gay porn. I heard they changed the rules regarding that but I could care less. The fact that White or anybody in the UFC has to take shots at boxing to pormote their own shit shows how pathetic they are. Same with the ppv sales. They talk about boxing being a dying sport and MMA is the new shit in town. Yet they never had sales like DLH-Floyd or Floyd-Hatton Hatton and Oscar are done and Floyd doesn't have an exciting style yet they destroy the MMA ppv sales in comparison. Fuck the UFC
