Pryor by close decision. The Hawk was both dynamic and tough enough to beat Julio but it would be an interesting fight. I think it's a good possibility Pryor hits the canvas a few times (without being hurt) making the score cards a bit closer than what the overall story would tell.
I'm surprised you're all picking Pryor. Chavez has neater, more accurate offense. Less open too. I used to think Pryor would win, but now I think Chavez would probably win a close decision.
Chavez was able to abuse opponents even when losing rounds and then taking them into deep water. He got stronger while the opposition was damaged and tired. I just don't think he could accomplish that with Pryor. His stamina was too good and because of his movement i don't see Julio getting in as many body shots as usually does.
Pryor was better at 140. But it would be close. Pryor's edge in hand speed would get him a close split decision.
Awesome match-up obviously. And a tough one to call. I think Chavez forces the action ultimately, so we'd see the Pryor who boxed Arguello (effectively) for much of the fight. With his movement and a mixture of offensive rallies, I agree Pryor wins a close decision.
I have always thought that Pryor would win this match-up pretty clearly, even though otherwise Chavez might be the better of the two. I think Pryor's speed and windmill style would earn him the win and probably bash Chavez' face up pretty bad
What speed? He's not much faster than Chavez. Upon rewatching a couple of Pryor fights recently, the first thing that struck me is he was slower than I had in mind. A lot of his punches are also very telegraphed.
Yeah, He's NOT Meldrick Taylor or Anything, but Pryor was MORE than FAST & ATHLETIC Enough to Trouble Chavez... Pryor had Pretty GOOD Handspeed Which, when Coupled w/the VOLUME of Shots he Threw, Tended to OVERWHELM Lesser Foes...Pryor WOULDN'T Do This to Chavez, but REED Thinks he'd BEFUDDLE Julio & Consistently BEAT Him to the Punch... Chavez WASN'T the Stereotypical, Face 1st Mexican Fighter, but he Certainly CAN'T Be Classified as a GOOD Defensive Fighter, Either...He was AVAILABLE to Be Hit, Pryor Would Hit Him A LOT & Chavez Would Have to Respect his POWER, Also... HIGH Contact, Fan-Friendly Affair...Chavez Likely Catches Pryor Off Balance or In an Exchange, Registering a Knockdown...But Pryor Pockets MORE Rounds & Doesn't Wilt When Chavez Finds Himself BEHIND, Trying to Stage a Late Rally... REED:hammert:
Faster, but not wide at all. Pryor's speed was unexceptional for a 140 pounder. Strong and beastly with good stamina, but not particularly quick.
How recently have you guys watched Pryor? He's not slow, but fast is certainly not a word I'd use to describe him. Here's a reminder http://youtu.be/kzFPg94a5dc?t=4m24s He also throws some really fucking wide, sloppy hooks. Chavez has neater, more accurate offense.
Average, Above Average, Good, VERY Good, Great, Roy Jones... If Those are the Handspeed METRICS, REED Thinks Pryor was Definitely in the Good/VERY Good Range... You're Right, his Shots were Rather WIDE, Primarily, but w/Out a Degree of HANDSPEED, his Shots Would've Been EASILY Countered & Evaded, Despite the VOLUME... REED:hammert:
True, he didn't had that Mosley handspeed. He was obviously quicker than Chavez, but not by much. I would pick Pryor but a Chavez win is no surprise either. He was tough as fuck and knew how to systematically break his opponents. He never had any problem with a boxer/puncher until he moved up and declined. Those who gave him fits were pure boxers.
Pryor threw every shot hard... no pitty pat bullshit... he had tremendously fast hands and was a ridiculous combination puncher, amazing He was also a shockingly effective boxer when need be
Yep... To Load Up AND Wing Your Shots, it Definitely Takes HANDSPEED , Landing as FREQUENTLY as Pryor Did... REED:shadow:
Definitely And he threw the most fucking AUDACIOUS combinations I've ever seen... 5 and 6 punch combinations with steam on them
Tremendously fast hands, come on :: I see no evidence of that at all, in any Pryor fight I've seen. Yes he threw hard shots, yes he threw impressive combinations, but fast? Not really. I'd say even Hatton had significantly faster hands than Pryor, and he's not considered a speed demon. In REED's scale, I'd put Pryor firmly in the "above average" category for a 140 pounder.
:atu: NO To throw hard 5 and 6 punch combinations, you need to be fast of hand... there's no two ways about it... a guy with "above average" handspeed can't get off shots like that effectively because even a mediocre pro will snuff them out... hell a guy with "above average" hands can't get off a 6 punch pitty pat, much less a 6 punch HARD combo... Pryor had tremendous handspeed
I don't know what Pryor fights you guys are watching, but from what I've seen of Pryor he had nowhere NEAR tremendous handspeed, not even close. Tremendous handspeed for me is the Taylors, Pacquiaos, Floyds of the world. Pryor's handspeed was very unexceptional for a 140 pounder, well within the average realm for a world class fighter. His combos are fairly fast, but the velocity of his single punches are no better than the "above average" category.
He's the only guy I've seen throw real 6 punch combinations with heat on them and succeed in doing so... most fast dudes would throw three hard ones and three for show
Pryor threw faster combos than Floyd. Floyd's handspeed has always been in his single shots, and in his overall anticipation and timing. Floyd has one of the fastest MINDS in boxing history, but his pure handspeed has never been exceptional. EXCEPTIONAL pure handspeed is Jones, Camacho, Taylor, Leonard, and for his size, Tyson.
yeah Pryor single or two punch combo were not the fastest...but when he threw 3-6-8 punches he is fast...a whole lot faster than RICKY Hatton..alm:
