New champion and now champion in four weight classes. :shadow: Now, I realize there was some controversey about him being offered the fight for a vacant title. Lucas Matthysse was a credible opponent and he got injured. Morales had NO control over either situation. They brought in a young undefeated but unknown fighter. he showed good speed and a good jab and easily won the first couple of rounds. But eventually we saw the experience of "El Terrible" shine through. I especially was glad he came back to win after Lampley and Merchant were suggesting it was a mistake to put him up for a title and to match him with a young quick fighter. Of course both of them pulled a page out of Steward's book after the stoppage and acted like all along they knew Morales would make it a war and then pull it out. My second fave fighter of all time behind #1 JC Chavez. :dancingBaby:
Cano did well in the beginning. He had a piston-like jab that was getting through. I have been a Morales fan since 1999. And I know he isn't what he used to be. Not even close. But at the same time, we should celebrate him back and victorious.
the "championship" is a fucking joke, let's be real here it was a fun fight and the old man did well, but this phony championship was handed to him
After seeing Morales last night, it did sort of make me re-visit memories of the old Erik, who was a fucking buzzsaw. Uncrackable chin, incredible heart and resolve, the same workmanlike demeanor all the time as he systematically breaks his opponents down and pummels the shit out of them. How can you not like Erik Morales? And he does deserve credit for winning last night, but he is not going to get much, because people "expect" him to win, even though they shouldn't. After the first few rounds last night, you had a lot of commentators already writing their eulogy for El Terrible. But the guy adapted and proceeded to punish this poor young kid in a potentially career-affecting manner. My problem with Erik's (successful) comeback is that I think he has just lost enough to make him end up losing, and losing painfully, against anyone world class at or around 140. Does anyone really want to see him in again with Pac? Or even with Amir Khan? I don't. I think he gets battered and bloodied against either. Does he have a chance to win fights like that? Sure. But it is a very, very small chance and at this point in his career, why does Erik need yet another pain factory style distance fight that he comes out of the loser? Always been a fan. I wish he'd retire right now.
I think if Morales quits that he fears drinking and weight problems are in his very near future. Perversely, he needs to keep fighting to stay in shape and to stay safe.
Like Erik himself said after the fight, it's not his fault Lucas pulled out. He turned up and fought whoever they put in front of him, and now he's a 4 weight champ. He would have pumelled Mathysse too.
He's the first Mexican to have a "title" handed to him on a platter because of Jose Suliaman being a racist
Props to El Terrible. Don't care about the title, I was just happy to see the living legend fight and pull out the victory again, in entertaining fashion as always.
Agree with that completely. Also if anyone needs congratulations it is Cano's corner for having the balls or heart to stop that fight which really should have been stopped sooner by the ref and especially the doctor who turned a blind eye to the damage that was just begging to be left alone. Why did the doctor think Cano needed to go back out there and get his face destroyed even more?
C'mon. It was a good win for Morales against a younger fighter, but I think you're getting bit carried away here.
how is he getting carried away? I saw the fight the exact same way he did, complete with the broadcast team doing a 180. The title is irrelevant. I just thought it was great that even as shot as he is, he still found a way to turn around that fight. Not selling Cano, who I cited as shit going in and expected to Morales to beat him in far more convincing fashion. Just saying it was great that he found a way to fend off shotness long enough to win the fight the way he did
If Morales hadn't been wearing the Japanese gloves, do you think he would've knocked Cano out? Or been knocked out himself?
