This is the summer of unexpected hits and abysmal bombs apparently. While most 'experts' were predicting the end of sequel fever after the disastrous performances by Disney's Alice Through the Looking Glass and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows AND the disappointing numbers from X-Men: Apocalypse, a little budget horror sequel over performs to almost identical numbers to its predecessor. The Conjuring 2 opened to $40.3 million taking the top spot this weekend. The James Wan directed sequel also had a solid opening internationally for a 3 days worldwide gross of $90 million which is more than double its budget. The first film grossed $300 million worldwide. Expect this one to reach similar final numbers.

In the second place, and underperforming at least domestically, the online RP video game based fantasy film, Warcraft, which had less than flattering reviews, took a disappointing $24.3 million. This is really a bad performance for a film with production price tag of $160 million. Under normal circumstances I will call this a box office bomb, but something funny happened in China. Against all odds and forecasts, 'Warcraft' opened to the BIGGEST NUMBERS EVER in the history of that country's cinema. In just five days 'Warcraft' took an amazing $156 million leaving the dust the prior record held by Furious 7. With those numbers its worldwide gross reached $285 million. At this pace this film could easily reach more than $500 million globally by the end of its run, regardless of its USA numbers.

A third new release, Now You See Me 2 debuted in the third spot with $23 million. That is so-so numbers for the $90 million budget sequel.

Last week's #1 film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows had a 58% dip from last week's debut and landed in the fourth spot with $14.8 million for a 10 days cumulative gross of $61 million.

Finally in the fifth spot X-Men: Apocalypse took $10 million in its third week for a current domestic total of $136 million. That puts it ahead of X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the eight most successful film in the franchise...out of nine.

And on a last note, sometime this week, probably before Friday, Captain America: Civil War will surpass the $400 million domestic gross.
