We've already heard Arum mention Cotto-Pac if Cotto wins against Foreman, but what if he gets Margarito? He's not even officially licensed in the states is he? The only way I see cotto agreeing is if he were to get a much greater share of the purse. http://www.boxingscene.com/?m=show&id=28168 "Former two division champion Miguel Cotto has not fully deserted the welterweight division. As*Cotto counts down the days until his challenge of*Yuri Foreman for the WBA' junior middleweight title, he doesn't rule out a drop back in weight for the right fight. Most were under the impression that he moved to 154 because of weight issues, but Cotto denies that there were any problems with reaching the welterweight limit. In his last fight, a twelve round TKO loss to Manny Pacquiao, Cotto*weighed under the welterweight mark at an agreed catch-weight of 145. The fight with Foreman next Saturday night at Yankee Stadium in New York, will be nine pounds above that weight. Cotto, even at 140, would sometimes enter the ring*with an added twenty pounds by fight night.* "I never really had a problem to reach 147 pounds.* Boxing is a business.* If we have a better opponent at a lower weight, we can always go back to 147 without a lot of trouble," Cotto said. If Cotto were to win, his promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank has already informed BoxingScene.com that he would become a frontrunner to defend the title against Pacquiao in November - if Arum is unable to match the Filipino fighter with Floyd Mayweather Jr. If Arum makes the Mayweather deal, he told BoxingScene a rematch with Antonio Margarito would be the perfect fight for Cotto." It'd be nice to see him get revenge and if he looks impressive against Foreman and stays with Manny, I hope Steward would let Cotto know to stay on Margaritos body more consistently. It might not be a bad option if he loses to Foreman, regardless I'd hope for Tony to get his stupid ass whooped.
Cotto also needs to learn to tie up an opponent. (SSM was effective against Margarito in that (& other) departments. Cotto never once did it.
Neither fight should be made, in my estimation. Nothing & no one should entangle themselves in any venture which puts Margarito back on the mainstream, top-ranked map, & that includes a high-profile, world-class fighter, such as Cotto. Margarito deserves a jail sentence --- the least he can suffer is the remainder of his days in pugilistic obscurity. As for Pacquiao...really? I was one who felt Cotto's chances going into the first fight were pretty decent, as underdogs go, but all his versatility was on display at different times during the course of that first bout, & Pacquiao had him comprehensively, overwhelmingly answered at every turn. It wouldn't sell half what it did first-time around, & Cotto would likely be in for another hefty beating. NO to Margarito on moral grounds. NO to Pacquiao on sensical grounds.
Thank you, good Sir. Any thoughts on where you'd have Cotto heading next, or would you rather see the outcome of his forthcoming bout before answering?
Yeah, I can't see anything in a Pacquiao rematch for Cotto except a paycheck. But if Cotto beats Foreman, there'd be a 154 belt in it for Pacquiao, so you can see the potential allure for Arum. I'm not sure what ahead for Cotto if he loses. If he still wants to fight, and Shane Mosley still wants to fight...that kind of bout could make some sense for both in that that they're both names nearing the end of their time as marketable fighters. I wonder if Cotto looks bad in losing, whether Arum would consider making a fight with Chavez Jr.
Margarito should be ostracized and keep fighting nobodies in Tijuana. Unfortunately he's promoted by Arum so he'll get a way back.
