Ok ever since Cotto almost was KTFO by Corley I had serious doubts about his chin, but ever since he went to 147 his chin has taken some solid shots pretty damn good. Thoughts?
I'd also like to add that if Cotto gets KOd five years from now it doesn't mean it was always glass. :nono:
I voted Great. Nobody shakes off flush full-force uppercuts and left hooks/right hands to the chin from the likes of Mosley and Zab Judah that easily and keeps coming forward. A good chin would've taken the hits and buckled. A bad chin would've wobbled and fallen. Cotto was still a novice when he was getting rocked and dropped. He's getting stronger and more solid with every fight, it's getting harder to bull this guy. And he's getting more confident with each victory.
Good is the Good answer. Mosley, Calzaghe, Toney, McCall... have what I call a great chin, Cotto isn't in this category IMO.
It's GOOD... Sure, Cotto's been STAGGERED, HURT, BUZZED or Whatever NUMEROUS Times, but he's Only Been DOWN 1nce...& Even that was More of a Throw/Push Down... Cotto's Chin ITSELF Seems VERY Good, if not GREAT...It's his TEMPLE Area that Seems to B the Most "Suspect"... His Overall PUNCH RESISTANCE is GOOD in REED's Opinion, Cause PART of Taking a Punch is how Quickly U RECOVER from it...& Cotto's RECOVERY is TOPNOTCH... REED
dsimon writes; Great until proven otherwise. I don't know what the fuck they are comparing him to but how many punchers did Calzighe get rocked by that hit as hard as Judah and Mosley? Torres was no slouch either. People are comparing Kessler's punches which are good, but come on! give it up brothers!! Cotto has to have a great chin to fight with his head fowards. He can carry the style thats the thing! You can't fight like that unless you have a great beard imo.
So do I. Lacy didn't hit him, but Kessler did. And he went nowhere. Then again, he hit Mundine too, and Mundine got laid out by Ottke. Still, Mitchell hit as hard as anyone....the test, for me, is that not only did Joe get back up....he went looking for Mitchell...which proves that he thinks he has a chin, and thats enuff for me. Its the way that Joe walked in against big hittas like Kess and Mitchell that makes me think Joe has a great chin. As for Cotto, the poll wasn't grey enuff. Ab initio, Cotto has a GOOD chin, but the skinny is that he can be hurt, and badly, if you catch him just right
dsimon writes: of course!!! he has not fought Margarito!! how could he possably have a great chin!!:: ::
You've hit the nail on the head. It isn't just the punch, its how often the opponent will throw bombs. Thats one thing Margarito will do. He WILL throw bombs. Floyd can hit a little bit but he doesn't throw em like he can/could/used to. Corley didn't walk in with gay abandon {ok maybe he did:: } but you see my point. Its not the punch, its the punching, or lack thereof.
He's never been hurt in 44 fights to my knowledge. He got knocked down when maybe the biggest puncher in the weight class at the time (mitchell) hit him with his very best shot, but Calzaghe got right up and didn't act hurt. When you have that, and no proof to suggest otherwise, the benefit of the doubt should go to Calz and the conclusion is that his chin is great.
It's better than I thought it was. I thought Mosley would take him out or at least really hurt him/ drop him. Cotto recovers very well
