OAK BLUFFS, MARTHA'S VINEYARD, MA.--I really hate to rain on a parade. I really and truly hate to be a wet blanket. But I am a graduate of DKU, Don King University, and I graduated summa cum trickeration, which is the highest degree that one can earn fron the Harvard of boxing. But, though I risk being branded a nattering nabob of negativity, I must say there is something fishy about Uncle Don's supposed announcement that returning ring legend Felix "Tito" Trinidad will fight ring legend Roy Jones sometime in January, 2008. First, let me say I welcome the fight as another needed infusion into boxing's strong resurgence. I think His Royness will play with the pride of Puerto Rico but, as Uncle Bob Arum would say, who cares? Two huge marquee names and they do huge business on PPV TV. If it's a mismatch, it's a mismatch. Caveat emptor and like that. What's fishy then? I just sailed back and forth from Martha's Vineyard and trust me, I know my haddock from my cod from my bluefish. I know fishy whether it's in Vineyard Sound or in boxing. Let me count the ways: 1--Roy Jones took his proposed contract, which he did not sign, back to Pensacola for further study. If you know the contract student Roy Jones, you know he will find more loopholes in King's contract than there are off-ramps on the Dan Ryan Expressway. In other words, Mr. Jones ain't signed jack, jack! 2--There is no broadcaster for the event. King is really just tossing Trindad's name and Roy's name in a shopping cart and now goes out to look for a broadcaster. This is not to say both HBO and Showtime won't be keenly interested but King will look for an outlandish price and negotiations could be prolonged. HBO, having the most money, starts in the lead of course. 3--Word is Tito is guaranteed $10 million while Roy Jones is guaranteed $5 million. How do you make that work when Trinidad has been retired so long and that Roy's last PPV did 25,000 homes. Btw, folks, that is 25,000, there are no zeroes missing, just homes missing from Jones' July 14 victory over Tony Hanshaw. 4--What's the venue, TBA or TBD? King is hunting for a site to pay him a small fortune or a big one if they prefer and he is also fishing for same. Did you know he was such an outdoorsman? 5--How do you announce a blockbuster fight when one of your two blocks, in this case Jones, has made no committment in writing? Don't discount the King. He may pull this off. But, right now, as you read this...there is no Trinidad-Jones fight and there is no Jones-Trinidad fight. What there is a flimsy contract signed by one fight? It takes two to tango and right now King got tango one, nothing more and nothing less. Maybe King is thinking like the rabbi at the circumsion when the baby boy's had his you know what altered. Somebody asks how long and the rabbi says, "Not long." Many fish bite with King's bait but here's a little tip I like would to relate (apologies to Taj Mahal) but...Roy Jones Jr. is not on the hook, not yet.
Reed bought it. Bigdawg bought it. xplosive. IMDAZED bought it. that's about it. nobody gives a shit about Roy Jones
Ya'll know me to be p4p the biggest RJ groupie on this site but I don't want to see this fight. I could realy care less for it. Roy needs to face Johnson, Woods, Tarver, or a cruiseweight. I'll Holla 5000
Roy a coward for not signing yet? Unless Roy has to pay to fight Tito, there ain't no way he's not going to fight Tito. It's an EASY fight for him and a BIG payday. Tito won't see one round he enjoys against Roy.
Dude your boy will get ko'd ala Hopkins style unless Roy carries him. WHich I can see him actually doing. I'll Holla 5000
of course he's a coward. everybody knows that. He tried to duck Tito the first time and now he won't even let Tito take a tuneup. Part of the deal is Tito fight him with no tune-up. What a coward. Cupey
Roy will be sleeping with the fishes. I can't wait till that thunderous left hook crushes Roy's chin. BUENAS NOCHES. C
Instead of Waiting til the 12th Round, Don Felix is Gonna RESCUE Tito During the STAREDOWN for this 1... Tito's Gonna Get WAXED...EASILY & EARLY... REED:bears:
Dude,Roy Wanted Tito Soooooooooo BADLY,he BEGGED him NOT to Fight Bernard AND he PREDICTED that Bernard would KO him... If ANYBODY KNOWS Felix Trinidad,it's Roy Jones... This was Back when Practically EVERYBODY Thought it was PREPOSTEROUS to even SUGGEST that Bernard could BEAT Tito,Nevermind STOP him... REED
agREED... There's No Fewer than 12 Rounds Roy could KO Tito N...That's 12 DIFFERENT Outcomes Right There... But Rest ASSURED,Tito's Getting KO'ed N 1 of them... Bet on an EARLIER 1... On Top of that,Roy's Gonna WHIP Tito Sooooooooo BAD,he Won't EVER Fight Again...Tito Fans will have the PLEASURE of Knowing that his LAST Fight was Against Roy Jones Jr... REED::
that was the happiest day of his life. He prayed for Bernard to beat him to save himself from being exposed. c
this is only going to end in one way, Roy getting KTFO. PERIOD. Tito just doesn't know which round yet, he hasnt' decided. I'm picking the 6th
This is the main sticking point. Roy's ego wouldn't let him take less than Oscar or Tyson. Obviously this will be a drama over the next couple of weeks. I guess next is the boxingtalk.com interviews where both guys call out the other?
I'm hoping it goes out the door. Boxing is enjoying a nice stretch right now. It doesn't need this fight. We're finally moving away from the recycling business and along comes this fight. Tito needs to stay retired, and Roy needs to find other ways to remain relevant. Either avenge the Glen Johnson loss, go for broke against a young gun... or go visit Ice-T's Rap School , and try to revive that career::
dsimon writes: Pardon my naivete but how do these guys find a catchweight? They are two different sizes. The hard part is Roy making a weight they can fight at.... seems to me. I don't see how Roy could get caught by Tito and if he does, even with his eggshell Tito does not have the size to hurt him. But who knows?
It wasn't offered on regular PPV, it would have done alot more. It's funny how simple logic flies out the window so quickly when hating.
Talk about revisionist history :notallthere: Tito retired when the only person he could face was Roy
I agree with this. No way Roy's going to take less money. I can hear his boxingtalk interview now as he explains the only reason the Hanshaw fight did 25,000 buys is because as he'll say it, "who is Hanshaw?" "nobody's heard of him, with Tito the public would buy that fight." Plus King is going to want options on Roy. My best guess is this fight isn't going to happen. I wish Tito would just stay the fuck retired. I think Tito gets jealous of Cotto and feels people have forgotten about him. Tito is just looking for his decadely ego stroking. If Tito does comeback, for god's sake I hope he has a decent hairdo this time.
How do you know he made that demand? Of course it's not surprising, it wouldn't be an RJ contract without one of his ridiculous stipulations or typical complaints about the money which is due to come up shortly.
I´m seriously shocked. :: Don just thought it was the appropriate time to make some noise, with nothing but a world title fight in Europe on the horizon, he got the attention he wanted. Tito signed his comeback on piece of toilet paper nothing more and if they expect Roy to accept a 66/33 split in favour of Tito he must be in real financial trouble. Although 5 million dollars are more than Roy will ever see again for stepping into a boxing ring, his ego won´t allow it. Even 25k buys won´t humble him.
Who says im hating? I just found it funny that it only did 25k. Im a realist about Roy, he looked absolutely shit against Hanshaw and even the biggest Roy fan should be able to admit that. Trinidad is one of only a few fights that Roy couldve taken with as little risk and such high reward.
