Most Cult Classics are just awful films enjoyed by either people with poor taste or ironic hipsters

one I saw that I found myself actually enjoying despite going into it expecting to hate it was "The Ninth Configuration" ... Tremendous performance by Stacy Keach and an extremely uncomfortable bar brawl

If a film as terribly written, acted and directed as "The Warriors" is considered one, then why not "The Last Dragon"?

what is the modern definition of a cult classic? In the past it was a movie that usually bombed at the box office on its first run and later attained success in the midnight movie market. The cult film had usually loyal fans that watched the film multiple times, attend showing dressed as characters in the film and the audience either chorused the lines or answered back at the screen. The films usually became merchandise magnets for posters, t-shirts and other stuff. Besides Rocky horror Picture Show and El Topo and don't know of any movie with similar cult fanbase.

A cult classic a is a movie that is loved by large number of people, but not enough to make a box office dent. The Last Dragon is the very definition of a cult classic.

Yeah it's usually a film that performed poorly when released but gains a substantial audience in the years after... Some movies don't really lend themselves to faggot dress up parties like the ones panchy likes to imagined

ninth configuration is a cult film... What are you supposed to do when you watch it, dress like a marine?

that is the worst film ever made

    nothing comes close

I've only watched it with the MST3K guys ripping on it... I can't fathom how awful it would be without those guys making me laugh

Some of the films mentioned here did not bombed at the box office. The Last Dragon debuted at #4 with $5.2 million, remained in ther top ten list for six weeks and finished its run with over $33 million which is a moderate success for a $10 million budget film. The film is liked by many, but didn't generated anything else besides decent video sales. Taimak's career ended with this film. More in the definition of cult classic is Blade Runner 1982 a film that had a budget of $30 million, was trashed by the top critics and bombed with a lifetime gross of $32 million.

When I was in my early 20's I dated this chick that was one of those 'Rocky Horror" crazies. However, she was smokin hot so I figured I could put up with watching the same movie every Friday night. After going 2 times and watching these loons dress up and act out scenes to possibly the worst movie ever filmed, I had to pull the plug.

To this day, the sheer mention of that movie makes me nauseous.
