    His accomplishments are far better.

He still fights today at 53, regularly. (8 times in 2007)

    Overall record: 83-15-7

Fantastic record for MMA, especially considering that he has fought an average of 7 times a year, EVERY year since he started in December of 94 in UFC 4.

Royce Gracie is overrated as hell. Now, everyone trains a bit BBJ in MMA. But Gracie cannot compete now against guys his own size.

And he fights once every ten years.

So a guy who influenced 'everyone' is overated?

Granted, I think MMA has evolved a whole lot since Royce's prime, but to deny him his place, or his influence in MMA is ridiculous.

    I understand what you're sayin.

    But Gracie is ridiculously overrated.

If guys back then had the skills they have today....Gracie isn't so fantastic.

however....Dan Severn has fought in MMA since day one,...several times a year, through all the changes and shit and STILL has a fantastic MMA record.

That is all I'm saying. Not dissing Royce's introduction of BBJ to the MMA world,...just that if it wasn't him, it could and would have been someone else soon.

Severn fights a bunch of nobodies and you think he's better than Gracie for doing that? Put their resumés, including notable victories, side-by-side. Just because Severn is more active, doesn't make him better. He usually looks really fat and out of shape, relying on his strength and wrestling experience. By contrast, Gracie has added facets to his game and is more well-rounded.

Plus, saying "If guys back then had the skills they have today....Gracie isn't so fantastic" is horseshit. Gracie was a pioneer and he brought BJJ to the forefront of martial arts. It's like saying, "If the best fighters went back and fought earlier fighters and had their knowledge and training, the earlier fighters wouldn't be so fantastic". What kind of retarded logic is that? The earlier guys were pioneers. Knowledge accumulates and the best fighters get better.

Gracie is obviously an MMA legend, but when he started in UFC almost none of the competitors were well trained in submission fighting. His style alone made him effective against opponents who didn't know how to counter it.

Gracie was also fighting at a time when just about everything, including groin shots, were legal. And he was usually fighting, and beating, guys much bigger then him.

He was fighting guys bigger than himself, but most of them sucked. I'm sure a lot of the current MMA fighters could beat guys bigger than them if they fought back in "the old days" against the level of competition Gracie was in against.

MMA has evolved to the point where weight classes are now necessary.

Before you attack me,...go to sherdog.com and look at the records.

Dan Severn has only 15 losses in a CONSISTANT from 1994 career of over 100 fights.

Do you really think that Gracie woulda done that?

with a distinctive size disadvantage. gracie brought bjj, severn brought wrestling, and shamrock brought a bit of both. they're all great pioneers in the game.

I'm not dissing you as a person. I'm just simply saying that Severn shows up at smaller venues and stomps a bunch of no-hopers. That's not high-level competition. Gracie, on the other hand, fought guys like Sakuraba (for 90 minutes), Shamrock (who beat Severn VERY FAST and got robbed in the rematch), and Yoshida (an Olympian). Quality of opposition is more important than number of wins.

Either Travis Wiuff or Travis Fulton has something like 100 wins. That doesn't make them better than Royce either.:dunno:

I know....Severn was choked out by Gracie BACK THEN when Gracie was the only one fightgin that way.

If they fought today, Severn would mash him at 53.

Severn, if anyone was overrated....back in the day he was beating up on guys smaller than him

And to compare Royce to guys of today is silly....The game is completely different.....Royce by no means is anywhere near the top of the list when it comes to the BEST fighters of all time, but his GREATNESS in the sport is undeniable

Compare Royce to his peers in his era, and he's untouchable....The game evolved BECAUSE of Gracie....Thats greatness

What you're saying makes no sense, Severn fights bums.

I hate the whole gracie family, I even hated Royce back in the day, I am a striker man thorugh and through, but fucking hell - to say severn is better is utterly retarded.

That's like placing the first chunk of Chavez' resume in higher regard than say, Duran or Ray's resume throughout their prime.

And even though I always felt Gracie's style was a little negative, he WAS a pioneer, he showed the world what BJJ could do, and he beat Severn. And beat much better opponents that Severn ever did too.

Sometimes I'm not sure if you're a troll or not Explosivo.

Hey, I know alot of Severns fights are against bums. He is 53 years old and has been active since he started. AND, he has alot of solid MMA names on his resume. Plus, he has fought nonstop as MMA has evolved around him.

I think Severn would be a decent test for Kimbo.......a helluva lot stiffer than Tank "Never was worth a fuck after ten punches" Abbott.
