I would agree with this, although he did some nice guitar work on The Wall. Still though, as a guitarist I think he had great feel and tone, didn't venture out of his comfort zone much but he didn't need to, he served the songs and at the end of the day that's all you really need.
I know, I know But the first solo on "Comfortably Numb" is very good stuff and the Brick in The Wall solo is also quite good Other than that, I'm with you
On the 'In The Flesh' / Animals tour in 1977, Pink Floyd management had to ask backup guitarist Snowy White (later of Thin Lizzy) to 'tone it down' as he'd occasionally show up Gilmour's inefficiencies during solos. Snowy, nailing it: Dave, struggling: Both with pig shirts....
The 'Comfortably Numb' solo is good but the rest of the song is cack. Brick in the Wall solo is good too, I agree. I really like the Money solo.
Have A Cigar > Pigs (Three Different Ones) > Comfortably Numb I prefer Gilmour's sound/tone than his actual playing, 'Saucerful Of Secrets', 'Echoes'...
Obviously a major component and contributing factor to Pink Floyd's success and signature songs. Never got into his solo stuff much (having acquired and listened to two of his solo albums).
In the kitchen, cooking/getting smashed listening to the last great Gilmour composition as a member of Pink Floyd: Dogs off Animals... Missus asleep on sofa: don't blame her - depressing song, but brilliant
...just another sad, old man All alone And dying of cancer-er-eeerrr. Uncanny. That's how I'm going out, I can tell.
I do like his sound and tone throughout that decade though. From the early 1970s with the Hiwatt DR103 All Purpose 100W heads and Fender Twin Reverb ´silverface´ going through WEM Super Starfinder 200 cabinets and the original Peter Cornish custom-built effects board was pretty consistent. I think he had it heavily modified for The Wall, though Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face (BC109); Pete Cornish Custom Fuzz P-1; MXR Phase 100; Univox Uni-Vibe; Colorsound Power Boost; Cry Baby wah wah; MXR Dynacomp; Pete Cornish Tone pedal; Pete Cornish volume pedal; MXR Noise Gate/Line Driver
