Personally, I think he could have more than a legit shot if he would take a different path.
His management has looked too much at JC Gomez's path and panicked imo.

No reason for Haye, at his young age.....to not fight a couple more fights against increasingly better opposition before facing a titlist.

This division is ripe for the taking, but, imo.. Haye isn't ready for Vitali right now.

Haye should have gone after Valuev instead.

Why joe? seriously? The thing is we all know the legitimate champ. That is my bone of contention with Mitchell and the rest of the boys who insist on mandatories, champions and step in line.. it is a disservice to the fans, as is the idea that Valuev, a gigantism suffering powder fisted freak, is a legitamite champ.

Sure in a division like Margarito's where there are a lot of fighters worth their salt the order should be followed, but the heavyweight division is no man's land.

I'm speaking more for Haye's sake than the division itself. He could use another fight before taking on Vitaly. Chewbacca would have been decent target practice. He wouldn't have gotten a shot at Valuev, so it's moot regardless.

Chagaev's the actual champion, not Valuev...who he's already beaten.

And I wasn't saying I wanted to see Klitschko fight Povetkin because he was the mandatory, it's because I think he's one of the best contenders in the division, and I think he's better than Haye.

I would have preferred to see Haye clean out the division and then go after the Wlad/Vitali fight but he didn't and he will soon regret it.

I've never seen Haye fight. Or even seen him. Is he big enough to hurt the big guys like Vitali and Wlad? Isn't he more of a cruiser-weight? I'm afraid that will turn out to be the case with Povetkin too. I can't see him beating either Klitschko. I see Wlad knocking him out in about 5 rounds, and Vitali stopping him in about 9.

When this fight happens, Vitali will be approaching 38. If Haye doesn's stand there like Peter and decides to circle the ring, shoot the jab, work the body...he may manage to get Vitali tired by the latter half of the fight.
I recall Chris Byrd saying that whenever he hit Vitali to the body, Vitali would let out an "Oomph" and would back up a bit.
The only thing is, nobody to this day since that fight has even attempted to work Vitali's body.:dunno: Everybody is a head hunter.

Vitali was like 210lbs as a kickboxer I recall. Now he's 250 solid. I think Haye will carry his power well.

I remember Lennox landing about a dozen body shots consecutively in the clinch and they had Vitali gasping....but then who wouldn't be?

David has a shot of course. He's quick, smart and obviously carries power. Vitali has weaknesses.....he carries his chin very high. He was inactive for 4 years, and i don't think the Peter fight brushed aside every doubt....Peter's effort was dismal

Haye will look to circle him, stay out of range of that jab and use his speed to make quick attacks....a little like Evander did at the weekend, but Haye will be more aggressive than that...

.I'm not sure if Haye can keep up those tactics for 12 rounds though......and that is why i can't pick him at the moment....Haye's legs will slow (Haye does tend to become more ragged beyond the half way point in fights), and Vitali will then be able to impose his strength advantage.....Haye's hope is that at 38, and being so inactive, Vitali struggles with the pace significantly more than he does

Lennox's gameplan primarily was to head hunt plus he's never been a bodypuncher. He landed a few good ones here and there. He was throwing looping haymakers for the most part and not really following a proper gameplan.

he was definitely going for the knock-out. i still can't believe Vitali didn't fold like a chair when Lennox hit him with that upper-cut.

but when all is said and done, Lennox's head-hunting plan did work. did you see Vitali's eye? that was the direct result of one of those "looping haymakers."

and it was clear when they finally did stop the fight, probably about 4 rounds later than would've been appropriate, it was clear to me that Lennox was taking over. Both guys were tired but it was Lennox who was still hurting Vitali even in the final round when Vitali basically used Lennox as a walker so as not to fall down.

That uppercut blew a hole through the bottom of his upper lip. Vitali is tough but his skin is paper soft.

well, he was fighting the reputation he'd been given as a quitter after the Byrd fight. he had something to prove. there's no telling that in the face of comparable danger that he'd react the same way. let's not forget the context surrounding Vitali's fight with Lennox. He was known as Quitali. Well he certainly dispelled that notion in his fight with Lennox.

Haye has absolutely no more than a 10% chance of beating Vitali IMHO. And I am a self-confessed Haye fan who has seen almost all of his fights and thinks he would beat most of the current HW's simply because they are shit.

Haye is fighting the wrong Klit entirely...

He won't be able to box Vitaly....he won't be able to land the "Haymaker" and ko Vitaly.......

so the only way he beat Vitaly is if the bitch has a shoulder injury....again..and quits...again...

I know you do, but with respect, you are wrong; a fact tacitly accepted by the Klits when they moved Wlad out of the firing line and Vitali in...

I don't disagree with you about the relative merits side by side of Haye versus Povetkin. P is better. But Povetkin does not have the punch necessary to beat the Klitschkps. IMO Haye has a chance because of the punch. Look, Toney imo could march as far up the ladder in this weak ass division as he wanted... but he does not have the size to face the bigger guys. That is a good analogy.

And your first paragraph says it all: nobody cares who the champ in that division is, my oversight is hardly pecular.

See thing is? I don't know if I think it would matter.Valuev is so bad and he is no threat to Haye or anybody half decent. The problem for Haye as I see it is what Mitchell says... A good boxer like Chageuv or Povtkin would probably beat him by avoiding his punch. Then the klits could avoid him indefinitely and it does not look like any punchers are coming up in the division.

Haye has a shot, make no mistake about it.

He can pull the trigger fast and is a pretty well schooled boxer/puncher.

Of course you have to make Vitali the favorite, but I see Haye with a pretty fair, maybe 35-40 percent, shot at an upset here as he is young, well-conditioned, powerful, and can hit.
