Two rather small heavyweight champions here with excellent boxing ability and big right hands. I'd give the speed edge to Ellis and he was the more polished fighter of the two, and the power edge to Haye. This will be a tough chess match to pick, and it is going to be scheduled for 12 rounds. Since Ellis fought very disciplined in handling Bonavena, Chuvalo and Quarry, I think he may be a bit too much of a complete fighter for David. Thoughts on this match up between two beefed up middleweight/light heavyweights?
I don't think Haye ever fought at light heavyweight, never mind middleweight. He's much the bigger man here..... I'm not sure if that's enough here or not. If Haye hits ellis clean he'll hurt him but Ellis ain't Monte Barret or Derick Chisora. Gun to my head - Ellis by decision but Haye by KO is nearly as likely.
Ellis a much better boxer, more skillful... It's a toss up because Haye does have a puncher's chance and his unorthodox style could seem a little unpredictable at first to Ellis... It's either Ellis by clear-cut decision or Haye by KO
Yep, Karl is talking crap. Haye was 200 lbs already as an amateur and was killing himself to get to cruiserweight. He is not very small heavyweight even by today's standards, in the 70s he would be among the biggest. And since he is much bigger and stronger than Ellis and as fast, he'd win easily
Ellis by decision, simply because both men are Counter Punchers, more or less. Horrific styles matchup. Haye would be posing and waiting and Ellis would be waiting. Haye rarely does well against compact guys who can match him for speed and movement, and who can keep up a bit of pressure. Ellis also was a blown up middlweight who lost to Younger Fullmer so it would count against Haye badly if he lost to his bum. Ellis also appears to have had a larger penis.
