I've had a few bad ones. Particularly those where I tried to watch amongst ignorant and/or stupid drunks. But there was one in particular that almost got me killed. I told a few guys on the old BT board this story.
Back in Fall 1997 on the night of Evander Holyfield vs Michael Moorer II for the WBA/IBF championship which was the main event of a 4-5 fight Don King ppv card, I was at some jerk's party. It wasn't a fight party, it was just a regular get-together and we were just getting drunk for the hell of it. I was playing pool and lost, and at the same time I lost money on a bet. Combine that with being drunk, I wasn't in a cheerful mood.
Harminder was flicking the channels on his parents' big screen tv and by chance, he went to the PPV channel and the Holyfield/Moorer II event was on. It wasn't scrambled which was odd. Nobody had paid for it either. The fight was just on.:dunno: I figured there was probably an issue with the cable company and maybe theY forgot to scramble the signal.
Either way, nobody seemed to complain. They just left the fight on and continued fooling around until the main event came about.
Back then, I was very sensitive to signal theft. I knew somebody had gotten busted once for watching a fight without paying so I decided to do my friends a favour.
I went to an unoccupied bedroom with a phone, and I called the cable company and told them that we were receiving the Holyfield/Moorer II fight card for free. I didn't have much clarity in my voice since I had been drinking but the lady understood well enough.
The main event had started and Holyfield was rocked in the 2nd round from a sneaky right hand by Moorer and everybody was going nuts! There were 11-12 of us, drunk and enjoying a world heavyweight title fight. Holyfield was hot property back then coming off the Tyson wins so his popularity was at an all-time high. The 3rd round was coming up, and suddenly, the cable signal suddenly went black. Everybody was in an uproar and seriously pissed off.
I told my buddy Sandeep what I had done, and I told him I did it for his sake so that the cops wouldn't come to his house and arrest him. I was laughing at the same time as if it was the funniest sh*t I ever did. Sandeep was so enraged, he grabbed a pool cue and came at me. Then did 4 other indian guys and I got chased out of there. Looking back, maybe it was the wrong thing to do. Although I still saved Sandeep from getting arrested and fined.

I was watching the Pacquiao - Barrera fight and in a lull in the action a friend had brought over these large, chocolate lathered brownies. They looked absolutely delicious. I had one and kept on eating them, almost gourging myself. They were so damn good. Then I felt kind of thirsty and went to the kitchen. My girlfriend had this worried look on her face, and I was kind of confused why. Then I looked at her right hand and she was shaking this empty milk carton. Both of us just looked into each others eyes with worry and gloom.

It was the worst fight party ever.

the worst one I had was Holy/Tyson II. Fistfights broke out in my living room, fellas' wives/girlfriends were all bitching that boxing was disgusting and they would never watch another fight again, and those who bet on Tyson didn't want to pay up, as they felt a DQ verdict voided the bets (hence, the fistfights).

Taylor-Hopkins I is up there as well. Card stunk from top to bottom, main event was a snoozer and a shitty decision to boot. The party atmosphere started out great, but declined with each fight, and then with each round once Hops and Taylor crawled toward the finish line.

You had a fight party based on a Hopkins main bout event?

You guys deserved the calamity that followed IMHO.

Well, around here, it was more of a Jermain Taylor party. My house, yet I was the only muthafucka NOT from Arkansas (or rooting for Taylor)!

The only Hopkins fight in history that was worth the money was Hops/Trinidad. Nothing else in his career is/was worth 5 bucks. Never have a fight party around a Hopkins fight.
That includes his upcoming fight with Winky Wright.

My worst fight party is when I'm with the guys.

You're stuck with a bunch of dudes who don't really know anything about boxing, yet they go into great detail about the technique and history of a particular boxer even though they're completely off. Then afterwards, after a few beers, they all think they're boxers.

My best party.....sitting with my girl and watching a pay per view while we both score the fights. Afterwards I look like a fool for picking it wrong and she rubs it in my face.

She's going on about 10 months and getting only one fight prediction wrong. Sometimes, she's even exact with the round. I should take advantage of that.

Exactly, it took another press forward killing machine like Tito to make a Hopkins fight even watchable. Hopkins may be a very good boxer, but I just don't see him being fondly remembered for his style when he is retired.

Fighters I would never base a 'fight party' around:

    Hopkins
    Ruiz
    Winky Wright
Yawn Manuel Fagquez (his new style is interesting though so maybe that might change)
    Cory Spinks
Ricky Hatton (unless he reverts to the old Hatton)

I'm sure there are a few I've missed but those guys stick out in my head as party killers.

Some of his earlier fights were more entertaining.

He's had his stinkers and his more entertaining fights, but ever since the Allen 3rd fight on, he's been pretty boring (although I loved watching him humiliate Tarver).

I never have fight parties, I usually just watch it with a couple friends, and they rarely say any of those dumb comments since most of what they know about boxing is from me.

The worst get-together was Lewis-Tyson because Mike got smashed.

The best part of watching a fight with your girlfriend is being able to put your hand down her pants under the blanket when you're on the couch.

You don't get those kind of perks at the Mandalay Bay.

Sandeep is such a cunt. I've had him over my house several times for fight parties and he always brings a pool cue with him. I don't even have a pool table. :dunno:

    Z you viscious bastard!.

If I had been there I would have demanded that Sandeep put the pool cue down immediately! So I could bash Hanzy like a Pinata amongst a group of drunk Mexicans.

Worst party. Oscar-Chavez. One of my friends got in a fight with my girlfriends dad. Her dad is an old school Mexican who hated DLH, loved Chavez. My friend is a black dude who hated Chavez because of the Whitaker decision. My friend cheap shotted him and her dad pulled a knife. Calling the cops on your own houseparty blows, but I didn't want someone to die:dunno:

Best party was a local casino fight. A bunch of my bros and I had ringside seats. A friend of ours was the main event. He won by TKO, we went back to his house for the party. I nailed a ring card girl.:bears:

When I was a kid, I watched Holmes-Cobb at my grandmother's appartment. She and her sister both got really drunk and got into a fight. They started throwing things at each other.

it was for the Barrera/Morales rematch. I was so eager to watch that fight and everything was going along fine. Then the walk ins started for the main event and the fucking cable went out.

I was so pissed I was screaming out the window.

the signal came back at the beginning of the third round. I eventually saw and recorded the whole fight a week after but it killed the mood because I always like to see the walk ins and introductions not to mention I missed two rounds.

Cobb can bring that out in people Rubio. Take the most mild mannered person and expose him/her to a Cobb fight (or movie) and they become a raving lunatic.

People don't fight at my parties but if they did they would probably drop my 240 pound ass in a second and then my 110 pound wife would smack everyone around and reestablish order in the Simon household.

I remember that, the same thing happened to me...but I called into the cable company and complained and they took it off the bill...all before the fight came back on (which we ended up watching for free).
