ESPN is reporting that Adrian Diaconu has injured his wrist and has withdrawn from his September 29th bout against Chad Dawson. The report states: "The withdrawal of Diaconu, the mandatory challenger, on such short notice had promoter Don King, who won rights to the bout in a purse bid, scrambling for a replacement opponent for Dawson on Tuesday. http://www.fightbeat.com/news_details.php?NW=20325
 Just when 2007 was Shaping Up as 1 of Boxing's BEST Years in Recent Memory, it's Starting to Become "The Year of the CANCELLATION/POSTPONEMENTs"... This Wasn't a BIG Fight, but it's PART of the Disturbing Trend we've Experienced Lately... REED:doh:
I left a message for Chris' promoter, Cameron Park to give me a shout about it this evening as I will be in meetings until COB at work today. Bob Spagnola and Cameron handle affairs of this nature, so we'll see what happens. If it does come off, Chad gets his ass handed to him on the 29th.
I wasnt that excited by diaconu anyway, it would be a nice surprise though if it didn't turn out to be a replacement can...
well, the only major fight that was canceled was vargas-mayorga. and that was rescheduled. same goes for marquez-juarez (although it was a garbage card to begin with). as long as calzaghe-kessler, cotto-mosley, and floyd-hatton go on, i think this year will be remembered as a great one.
Unless Chris is ALREADY Prepping for an Upcoming Fight, he'd B FOOLISH to Step in & Fight Dawson, KARL... REED
That would be great of Chris Henry were to get this slot. If he's available, Karl, your boys really gotta get on the phone to DKP. Maybe even go to the WBC. He'd be the next available contender.
Cameron has a proposed show for Chris in his hometown and Bob Spagnola doesnt like the Dawson matchup, I doubt it happens now.
I talked with Bob the last time I spoke with you pug, and spoke to him and Cameron (I thought you were there) how I thought Chris could put Chad on ice, shot selections that make up the components of the knockout process that in my mind would work very effectively vs a guy that paws his jab out there. This is a very winnable fight for Chris, and hopefully they can make it, if Chad will take him on. That fight in Beaumont Cameron is making for Chris ought to be dropped if he is offered this title fight, IMO. Never look a gift horse in the mouth is my slogan. That is about all I can offer you folks as I am not the man's manager or promoter.
And let me add that Dawson fights with his hands at his waist and is open for ko shots. Bob said "Chad Dawson is a good fighter", and I said "He's good, but he is very flawed because..." But I know what you are saying bro as he defended Dawson at once when I said that.
are you saying he's the replacement? I saw his name somewhere else, he was supposed to fight on the Peter-Maskaev undercard (I think against Paul Briggs). I had a feeling King would attempt to juggle the lineups between the shows he has (three weeks in a row). But if he's the replacement, this fight is no longer Showtime-worthy.
He pulled out of the Briggs fight, so he could fight Drews for the WBA title, now it looks like he could pull out of that fight for Dawson. ::
well if Briggs-Mendoza is no longer on the table, then King should just have Briggs step in and face Dawson. Briggs wanted the fight three months ago, I;m sure he wouldn't mind taking it now.
and fill me in on Mendoza. The last time I saw him was whenever he fought Librado Andrade. I know it's a dumb question, considering the alphabets, but has he done anything since getting his ass beat down that night to warrant a title shot of any kind? (esp. at another weight).
You are onto something here. First it was supposed to be Briggs/Garay, but Garay has agreed to a third fight with Erdei, then it was supposed to be Briggs/Mendoza, but Mendoza has agreed to fight Drews. Poor Briggs.
I have no idea, but if he gets a title shot against a Universum fighter, it canĀ“t be much. :: EDIT: He has beaten Keith Holmes in an eight round fight at 175.
