By definition, a “dark horse†is a little known contestant whose chances of winning are doubtful or uncertain. In the pugilistic sense, it’s a fighter who’s brought in to be just an opponent or a steppingstone to pad the record of a more heavily hyped foe. Manager/trainer Al Smith has embraced the term, even adopting the name “Dark Horse Boxing†for his stable of fighters.
