What an underrated fight! These guys went to war. The ref was horrible, allowing the low blows, and nonchalantly stopping the fight. Moore's corner was just as bad; it's a shame they let their young fighter take the beating he had taken. Not to mention, Moore was way too green to take on a fighter like Duran to start with!

Unfortunately, we know how it ended for Moore with the car incident. On the bright side, if there was any, his death spawned the meteoric, but short lived bright career of Iran "The Blade" Barkely; Barkley dedicated his first fight with Tommy Hearns to Davey Moore after Moore's death, and subsequently went out there and knocked Hearns out in the third round in a fight no one gave him a snowball's chance in hell to win.

I don't buy Moore being Green

He was already a world champion and had knocked out Ayub Kalule... he was as good as he was going to get, frankly.

Duran was considered finished by most observers, having capitulated rather meekly to Wilfred Benitez (who pounded him at close range) the year before and then followed it up with an uninspired and sluggish losing effort against the gifted but flawed Kirklaind Lang. He had won a crossroads fight against Pipino Cuevas, who was basically shot to hell. Moore was a 5-2 favorite to win that fight.

It's funny, but even back then I was crap at predicting fights. I remember clearly thinking Moore was going to handle Duran. Duran had looked like crap for a couple of years. I think Moore was a clear betting favorite as well.

I watched Duran live a couple of fights prior against Jimmy Batten and remember thinking he looked slow, lethargic and even off balance at times. He looked like a shell of a shell of his former self. (Can anyone tell me the main event that day?)

Moore was green to be sure, but as Cdogg said, I don't think Moore's style and skill would have beaten Duran on that night even if Davey had another 20 fights under his belt.

On top of that, Duran was back. He showed glimpses against Cuevas. But by the time he stepped in the ring against Moore, the bloated beer belly was almost completely gone and Duran looked solid again.

The bottom line is that few guys were going to stand right in front of Duran and beat him. His subtle head movement, punching accuracy and deceptively quick trigger was just better than most at close range. .

Was that the Duran walkout bout after Pryor/Arguello?

If so, how many people stuck around to watch?

Typical Duran achievement: he fouls his way to beat a solid but overrated (and very inexperienced) kid and his supporters talk about it like it was the greatest thing any athlete has ever done. Also since Duran was too soft to get his lazy ass training in the previous years, this DQ worthy performance counts as an impossible comeback as well

THIS is a great point. Dirty third world maggot was a disgrace to boxing.Like nearly all his fights, when he couldn't jump on them like helpless slightly drunk tourists, he would lose. When the ref let's him go "Panama sYLE" be beats poor honest sportsman and then demands credit for it. Then again, this is what happens when a drunken Indian gets bent over the side of a banana boat by a Mexican sailor. The world was given this gluttonous savage.

Like when he beat Sugar Ray Leonard?

Also, this post is openly racist. Isn't that against the rules?

There is nothing racist about it. Duran was the product of a one night stand of an indigenous Panamanian women and a Mexican sailor. It is a fact. Yes, he jumped on Ray Leonard and fouled the shit out of him. Care to tell me what happened in the rematch. No fighter has ever gotten as much mileage as the humping homo Duran beating Gay Ray once. He then quit in the rematch, quit. At the very least, it cancels out the victory.I do apologize though. I made up the banana boat. It was probably a bathroom in some dirty bar.

The direct implication being that the respective ethnicities are dirty and lesser, and that the coupling of them would obviously produce a "gluttonous savage." You would never make a statement like that around a bunch of vatos in LA or SF, because it is obviously offensive and you would obviously get your ass beat for it.

You talk like beating Leonard is nothing. Hearns couldn't do it, Benitez couldn't do it. Duran did it. And we all know what the conditions of the rematch were (Duran out of shape, 24x24' ring, etc etc). Even then, he didn't quit out of cowardice, fear, or pain. He quit because Ray was there to clown and run, and Duran just wasn't in the mood to play that shit. As Larry Merchant once said, "perversely, that may have been the most macho moment of Duran's career."

That is your inference. A rich stockyard owner IN Panama could buy and sell you and me. The second part of your post is just pure nuthuggery. The guy quit in a completely cowardly fashion, period. Make all the excuses you want, but he was 1-2 for rAY lEONARD IN HIS CAREER. I deal in facts. You want me to agree with your homoerotic nuthuggeryand come to an opinion based on feeling and emotion which will never happen. Fact is he jumped and intimidated a young sexual assault victim and then quit once the assault victim decided to use his vastly superior skill set in the rematch.

I miss the days when you were a good and objective poster instead of a hater and one who relies far too much on playing the opposite card.

Underrated? This fight gets all kinds of acclaim, 30 years later! Great fight, but not underrated.

Davey had 12 fights under his belt when he took on a legend......who was clearly rejuvenated with a big win in his last fight(Cuevas). The way this fight went was exactly how I thought it would,..... except I thought if Duran won by stoppage,...it would be much later, and farrr less brutal.

Duran is one of most boring fighters in history. The amount of acclaim he gets is disgusting. I am surprised guys who hate MMA like Duran. He was a dirty fighter. He beat the shit out of poor Davey Moore and it was tedious. I wondered what fucking sport am I watching. One guy is a sportsman, is following rules, is involved in a sport, the other was Duran. Honestly, I am easily the most objective poster here. I just don't get the acclaim for this scumbag. He was a dirty, dirty piece of shit in and out of the ring, a fake ass tough guy who insulted Gay Ray's kids, his wife, his family and then the victim decided to take him to school and he quit. It is easily one of the most cowardly moves in the entire history of the sport, yet Duran gets a pass on it.

The worst part is he wasn't even getting his ass kicked. Ray just decided not to let him hit his balls, hold him, foul him. He used his legs and humiliated him. Did Duran sack up? Did he use his supposed legendary skills? No, he quit. Yet some of you have the audacity to suggest that Ray, was not following the rules. Duran is a religion on this forum and like all religions it is bullshit.

Maybe you could start concentrating more on posts than posters, and let the matters argue instead of taking it to personal level. It is ok to disagree. You don't share my Duran hating agenda, just as I don't share your Klitschko hating agenda, but we can still be buddies:truce:

A better clip his him getting his head splattered by Hearns or William Joppy. How about the highlight when he he waived his hands in the air and said no mas. Did those make the highlight reel?

Dude, I'm so bad at picking fights that I picked Davey Moore yesterday prior to watching the Duran fight again.

I really thought he'd pull it out this time.

You must be a huge fan of Kermit Cintron, he is very righteous and exalted in your view.
