Earnie Shavers punched hard and Chris Byrd had good defense, but these guys fought in different eras.
I think Shavers catches him at some point, maybe in the 4th or 5th. If they fought ten times Byrd would definitely win a few though.
If Shavers could catch a prime Holmes, I see NO reason why he couldn't catch bum ass Byrd. Shavers knocks him dead.
There's a difference between putting someone down and putting someone out...and their isn't a logical conclusion to be drawn that knocking someone down of higher skill level equates to knockouts of lesser skilled fighters.....by that logic Earnie Shavers would have been much less mediocre than he actually is. I'd likely pick Byrd just because Shavers was so dreadful.
The difference between Shavers putting Holmes out and putting him merely down had a lot more to do with Holmes than it did Shavers One doesn't need to be great to beat Chris Byrd
True, but One Needs to Have MORE than Just POWER to Beat Him, as the Tua Fight Illustrated...REED's got Byrd by UD, 7 Out of 10... REED:mj:
I think Shavers wins because he isnt the slow lumbering heavyweight that Byrd likes to feast on....plus i will bank on shavers catching and hurting Byrd pretty much anytime he catches him...which IMO would happen more often then some people think
I think Young, at his best, was quite a bit better, personally He was a poorly managed fighter and was not the most dedicated guy but when he was on, he was very difficult and slippery and threw a lot of distracting junk at you... like a journeyman knuckleballer who had some great years and some terrible ones... a poor man's Phil Niekro... like Charlie Hough
He was good at his best, but inconsistent and he was also at a much less of a size disadvantage than Byrd.. plus Byrd was more dominant (in the sense that he was always the clear winner in close fights). I think in my mind Byrd would've been a very good light heavy or cruiser if he'd stayed there instead of moving to heavy at the start of his career. But with this opinion, I'll give you the caveat that I've seen a lot more of Chris Byrd than I have of Jimmy Young
Goddamnit. I read through this thread hoping no Ibeabuchi mention would be made, and low and behold, the second-to-last post stole my thunder. Fucker.
