http://tvbythenumbers.com/2010/09/0...nt-exclusive-to-multiple-espn-platforms/62084 ESPN Unveils Lineup of Fall Boxing Content Exclusive to Multiple ESPN Platforms Posted on 02 September 2010 by Bill Gorman While ESPN Friday Night Fights recently concluded its 2010 programming season, boxing fans can still turn to ESPN platforms for quality fights through November 2010. ESPN unveiled Thursday an impressive lineup of fights that will air live and exclusively on ESPN3.com for U.S.-based consumers in addition to other ESPN platforms. ESPN will kick start the fall lineup with the Sat., Sept. 4 Felix Sturm/Giovanni Lorenzo (29-2, 21 KOs) bout, which will determine the WBA middleweight title. The fight will begin at 4:30 p.m. ET. live on ESPN3.com and ESPN Deportes. A title defense for Sturm (33-2-1, 14 KOs), the match will be his first fight in 14 months. In late July, ESPN3.com was announced as the live digital platform for the Sept. 11 (5 p.m. ET) Wladimir Klitschko/Samuel Peter tilt from Frankfurt, Germany. That fight will mark the second time the platform has carried a Klitschko heavyweight bout. ESPN Deportes will also air the fight on tape-delay at 8 p.m. ET with a re-air set for ESPN on Sept. 12 at 4:30 p.m. ET. Klitschko (54-3, 48 KOs), the unified heavyweight champion of the world, and Peter (34-3, 27 KOs) first met in a 2005 title elimination bout with Klitschko emerging victorious. Moving from the heavyweight class to a lighter brand of boxing, on Friday, Sept. 17 at 8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN will celebrate Mexico’s 200 years of Independence with exclusive coverage of the Bicentenary Caribbean Rumble. In addition to ESPN3.com coverage, ESPN2 and ESPNPlay, the broadband network for live sports programming in Latin America, will carry the fight live. The Caribbean Rumble will feature Wilbert Uicab (29-5-1, 18 KO’S) against Edren Dapudong (20-2-0, 10 KO’S) in a 12-round bout for the WBC Silver Flyweight Championship. The co-feature will pit Alisher Rahimov (20-0, 11 KO’s) of Russia against Jose Emilio Perea (18-0, 10 KO’s) of Pachuca, Mexico, for defense of Rahimov’s WBC International Lightweight Championship On Saturday, Oct. 16, ESPN will again carry another heavyweight championship bout featuring a Klitschko. Just over a month after his brother, Wladimir, takes to the ring, Vitali Klitschko (40-2, 38 KOs) will battle Shannon Briggs (51-5-1, 45 KOs) for the WBC Heavyweight title from Hamburg, Germany. ESPN3.com will carry the action live beginning at 5 p.m. ET. ESPN will air the fight the following day on Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. Deportes will air the fight at a time later to be determined. To close out the fall action, a special military-themed ESPN boxing special will air on Monday, Nov. 8 at 8 p.m. ET. It will be carried on ESPN3.com and ESPN2 live. The fight card will be announced at a later date. ESPN Deportes will carry the boxing special on Nov. 9 at 9 p.m. ET. Both Klitschko fights will get next-day airings on ESPN...so boxing is back on cheaper tv. artie: :: Klitschko-Peter: with a re-air set for ESPN on Sept. 12 at 4:30 p.m. ET. Klitschko-Briggs: ESPN will air the fight the following day on Oct. 17 at 2 p.m.
I saw a while ago that Uicab (a Telemundo regular) was scheduled to fight on ESPN2 well after the end of the FNF season. I thought it was a typical unconfirmed Boxrec listing... but good to see him on the Duece. That card actually looks pretty good.
Wow I have to say this is excellent news. More fights with top fighters on ESPN! A step in the right direction... I am hoping Briggs and Peter can land flush and make it interesting for both the Klits. On a sidenote - what is the WBC Silver Flyweight Title ???
But if Sam Peter wins, just wait for mexboxing to tell you that he has "breathed new life" into the division. It would be fun to see them reverse their opinion of quitters in a hurry.....
Wlad Klitchko on free tv. Sounds good on paper but think about it for a sec. Wasn't it better when Wlad was safely tucked away and more or less hidden on HBO? Now most of America will get to see this guy's fights and how boring he is. I can see myself at the water cooler at work trying to explain this shit to a bunch of football and MMA fans. "No he isn't usually that boring...well, sometimes, but it depends on the matchup." "Yes he always clinches guys even though they're half his height, but you have to understand his reasoning...no I don't know what his reasoning is." After several frustrating minutes I end it with "Look, guys I have to get back to work." It's like the old saying, be careful what you wish for you may just get it.
Why don't you just tell them that Wlad earned fiddy million and has mad sluts on his D. Works for Floyd after a "boring performance".:mj:
Not a bad idea. I can even add they must really like the guy because they're sitting here discussing him with me. ::
I like boxing. I like all sorts of styles. Wlad has become conservative, but still knocks guys out too.
Wlad's getting long in the tooth and I think this is a bad time to have him on free tv. Guys tend to get more cautious and take less chances with age. I also don't expect Peter to put forth much effort and aggressiveness after what Vitali did to him. I can see him coming in here just for a pay check and stinking out the joint and getting dropped 3 or 4 times. The heavyweight division has sucked for years. Putting it's top fighters on free tv isn't going to change that and will in effect make it more visible than ever. Still, that's only a small negative about the whole thing. Wlad should be fighting on ESPN as I feel heavyweights are a waste of an HBO/Showtime card in the first place.
The rot has been in place as early as 1996, as far as America is concerned. Klitschkos only turned pro that year.
He was like 16 pounds lighter in his last fight than he was for the Vitali fight...I think that's a positive sign if he can come into the Wlad rematch in similar shape. Hopefully the fight does good television numbers...the ESPN broadcast will be a day after it happens, so people will be able to read what kind of fight it was before watching it.
Yep I definitely think Peter has had a subtle change of attitude for this one. As I said he will be naturally emboldened, as much by the impression of how well he did as by how well he in fact did, in their first meeting. That said, Wlad also came into their first fight on far shakier ground than he currently stands. So they both have "improved" but they are both still vulnerable. Sam Peter has taken an 8 round pounding from Vitali in the interim, and those rarely help. If he can come in under 240 then I make him a live underdog.
Klitschko-Briggs will be on ESPN3 at 4:50 ET today. http://espn.go.com/espn3/index/_/sport/boxing/view/upcoming/ I believe both Bute-Brinkley and Klitschko-Briggs will be replayed tomorrow at 2 ET on ESPN.
Dmitry Pirog-Javier Francisco Maciel will be on ESPN3. http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/columns/story?columnist=rafael_dan&id=6156701
