    Cortez to ref Calzaghe-Hopkins!
Joe Cortez will be the third man in the ring for the huge Joe Calzaghe-Bernard Hopkins showdown in the Planet Hollywood Ring on April 19 in Las Vegas. Cortez, famous for his catch line: "I'm fair but I'm firm", has handled 138 world title contests. The last Calzaghe fight he worked was in October 1997 when the Welshman won the WBO world super middleweight title against Chris Eubank. He has only worked one Hopkins fight and that was against Robert Allen in April 2004. The unbeaten Calzaghe is happy with the decision to have Cortez officiate his light heavyweight and US debut. "I'm delighted that an experienced and well respected referee like Joe Cortez is in charge of our fight but he's going to have very little to do apart from give Hopkins a count to ten. I don't do holding and mauling, I come to fight, and Joe is aware of that so I'm sure he will let me get on with my job. When Hopkins is getting beat up and his dream team of trainers fuss over who will throw in the towel, at least he knows that Joe will step in and save him."

When did Joe Calzaghe develop a sense of humour?

GREAT News for Calzaghe...But it Wouldn't Surprise REED if Bernard Threatens to Pull Out, Unless the Ref is Changed...

He's Done Such Things N the 11th Hour Previously...

The real question is why this announcement is made 3 weeks before fight time?

Are they trying to use Joe Cortez to hype this fight:dunno:

An unexpected lag in British ticket sales?

I don't know about three weeks, but I've seen reports like surface in what I would guess were 2-3 weeks before the fight.

The Timing IS STRANGE...Usually the Ref ISN'T Announced Until a Couple Days PRIOR to the Fight...

This Leaves ALOT of Time for Cortez's INTEGRITY to B "Compromised", if he HAS Any...

I would think Cortez would actually be better for Hopkins, not Calzaghe.

Hopkins is the one who will look to use a slow-paced, punch-and-grab kind of fight, like he used against Winky Wright last time out.

Agreed. Cortez has never seen a clinch he wanted to break.

 Good call, I forgot about that. Still, for the most part, he's known to let clinching go.

Fair but Fag has become the worst big name official in the sport. He somehow makes Jay Nady look honest.
