Which Fighter has the FAKEST Personality N Boxing???...Which Fighter Puts Up the Biggest FRONT,which Fighter is Most Concerned w/Projecting an "Image" that ISN'T True to their Norm??... DeLa???...Floyd???...Roy???...Zab???... How about HISTORICALLY???... Ray Leonard???...Ray Robinson???... Who's the Most GENUINE??? REED:dunno:
Using REEDS words "put up a front" You don't think Mayo puts up a front ? Or Tarver with his whole legend killer crap ?
What do you think about Hoya is fake or a front ? :dunno: Only thing I can think of is maybe he isn't as nice as he appears in interviews.
George Foreman always struck me as a Jekyl and Hyde since his reincanation into a big cuddly teddy bear. I think he's a bit closer to a Sonny Liston type in real life then he lets on in front of the camera. DeLa's an obvious choice and Floyd loves to play the WWF type villian when on-screen. "Genuine" is tough to quantify. Glencoffe Johnson maybe? :dunno: or maybe "humble" is a better word for him, I don't know.
How he fronts with that fake smile and pretends to be all nice with his rehearsed interviews when he's screwed over countless people and always is so full of it. Actually I don't know if that makes him the fakest, that might be a little harsh. Lots of fighters put on a front in order to sell a fight or sell themselves (image). Muhammad Ali was described by many people in his reader as being very quiet and shy behind closed doors. Once the camera was on and the lights were on he was a totally different character. George Foreman had that smile all the time (no wonder he loves Oscar), but more than a few people say he's fake. Floyd likes to claim he's real and all that and talked about how Oscar was fake, but Floyd tries to do that smiley, nice-guy thing too. He just can't keep it up for long because his ego is too big.
Well , I really don't expect fighters to be all that nice behind closed doors. I mean these guys do participate in hand to hand combat as their jobs. How nice could they possibly be. :dunno: I never really heard of Oscar screwing people. I also never heard anyone complain. True he negotiated but the other guys still made more then usual. I do think Oscar does care for the sport for the most part.
Yep... REED Knows a Guy who was Part of Curtis Cokes' "Entourage" During his Hall of Fame Induction in Canastota...George Foreman was Inducted the SAME Year... Anyways, the Dude Approached George "Behind the Scenes" ,so to Speak, & Asked him to Autograph a Picture...George Kinda Grunted @ him & Rolled his Eye's...Knowing George's TRUE Nature, Curtis Cokes Said,"Just Go Ahead & Sign it George & he'll Leave you Alone."... George Snatched the Photo,Signed it,Shoved it Back @ the Dude & Said,"I ONLY Did that Cause you Know Curtis"... The Guy Said George was VERY Intimidating N Person... REED
Shelley Finkel (along with Joel Sr), Robert Middleman and Steve Nelson, his revolving door of trainers and cornermen. I guess Oscar and Ray Leonard kiss and made up after Oscar and his people rushed the product of "The Contender" out with that horrible show "The Next Great Champ". Ray and Stallone were mad for a little while about that one. If Oscar screwed Bob Arum over, than I applaud Oscar.
Good Guys Bad Guys in Boxing I have met over 100 World Champions and 100"s of top Contenders Most Boxers are very decent and Humble people. The most Humble is Emile Griffith. Emile treats everybody the same. Black or White, Rich or Poor. He is in Bert Sugar's Top 30 fighters of all time. One Boxer who is not a nice Guy is B. Hopkins . He does not trust anybody and still has that Jail house mentality I think you guys are right about George Foreman. He really ]reinvented himself because of $$$. If you got the cash ,he will be very nice to you. He is an intelligent person who knows how to sell himself
The fakest IMO has to be Floyd. He talks of "murder" and "destroy". Then he fights the safest, low risk fight he possibly can. The whole wannabe-gangsta act is just rediculously fake. The most geniune? I don't know too many superstar boxers personally so its a catch 22. Going off my best assumptions with interviews and so on I would have to go with Glenn Johnson or Juan Diaz. But who knows, when the camera isn't filming if they push drugs on school corners:dunno:
Yeah, I was there REED so I believe that story. I actually saw Foreman sign quite a bit up there but he was pretty surly and he wasn't happy about it at all and he was picky about what he'd sign. I felt kind of bad because I sold a whole slug of 16x20 photos of George while up there. I had two poses. One of George during the Ali fight and one of George after the Moorer fight. The Ali fight pose was obviously the nicer shot so I sold the most of those to people who wanted to try and get them autographed by George while he was there. I heard later that he was refusing to sign the Zaire pose because he had bad memories of the fight. :: Then of course, George goes up to give his induction speech and he does a complete 180 and magically turns into the George we all know and love. :bears:
You're right about Emile. I've heard nothing but nice things from people who know him, almost to the point that Emile's the type to get taken advantage of far too easily. Not sure about Bernard. I've seen him in Canastota and he was doing nothing but chatting with fans non-stop though I admit I don't know much about him outside of that.
dsimon writes: I have heard that Ray Robinson didn't like to fight. I don't know if this is true. I have a problem with this concept of real versus fake. I mean your public persona is part of your personality. I don't think any person can really be totally different whatever that is. WE all get irritated and react occasionally. Celebarities are often hounded which makes them irrate at times. Also, a lot of these guys are still kids, they are not role models. That is why it ammuses me when people get angry at Floyd for acting like a spoiled teenager when in fact that is how a lot of guys that age act.
Robinson said in an interview (it's in the documentary Bright Lights and Dark Shadows) that he didn't enjoy fighting and it was strictly business. Most likely killing Doyle had a part in that. Still, as talented as he was, I have a tough time believing someone can reach such a high level of the sport without having some enjoyment in what he was doing.
Michael Spinks OPENLY HATED Boxing & was CANDID about Being SCARED B 4 Every Fight...] He even Got a JOB after the '76 Olympics,Cause he DIDN'T Want to Box Anymore...N a Warehouse or Some Shit... But ALL he was Good @ was Boxing,so he Turned Pro & Made Millions... REED
Spinks I can believe because he pretty much cashed out and left the sport after the Tyson fight. Robinson kept in shape and fought well into his 40's. It seemed he loved his entourages and spending money much more then he hated the sport of boxing.
DelaHoyas CV speaks for itsself.. The biggest fake IMO at this time has to be Floyd, He could do so much more, lets hope he fullfills that potential.
