    Ventura County Star:

And Thursday, the Oxnard native signed a contract to fight Ricardo Mayorga, a bout which Vargas says will end his career as a boxer.

The farewell fight will be held Sept. 8 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

The fight will be at 162 pounds, rather than the 154 division Vargas has competed in for his entire career. Tickets for the bout are expected to go on sale shortly

    Good fight for Vargas ...

Vargas still has a small amount of time to make a brief comeback.
If he can find himself in a weak division , he could make some noise.

Perhaps he might have better stamina at 160.

Vargas is more damaged goods than you realize. And he's too brave for his own good. Mayorga will bludgeon him.

Vargas has stated that this will be his last fight (though that could obviously change).

I tend to believe he's ready to retire, though.

Hopefully fighting for the first time in a huge LA venue like the Staples Center - as opposed to the Grand Olympic Auditorium - in what he says will be his last fight, Vargas will come in and look to be at his (diminished) best, whatever level that is...if he has anything left (which he may not).

This fight could be a good exciting one between two aging warriors, unless Vargas and Mayorga are both shot and come into the promotion and the fight just going through the motions in order to cash out.

Vargas is extremely more skilled than Mayorga. He won't beat him as bad as the way DLH or Tito did, but he will beat him. It is too bad that Vargas couldn't get a second wind in his career about now. If he could make 154 again he could seriously find himself in title contention. But it might be a case of too little, too late.:eek:ld:

I've been waiting for this fight for years and not because of these guys skills but because of their personalities. Yeah, I know I look like a soap opera fan here, but I can't wait to read and hear the smack that will be exchanged between them. I don't give a damn how meaningfull this fight is, it will be entertaining and I can't wait to see it. :bears:

Mayorga might be just as damaged at this point ...

You also forget , as shot as Vargas might seem to you , he has yet to lose to a lower level type oponent.
He has only lost to 3 Great fighters.

Vargas has nothing much behind his shots now, long gone is that great snap on the end of his shots that made tough guy Yory Boy Campas quit. He is pushing his punches, and I think this is a good spot for Mayorga to get a knockout and resurrect his career.

I don't think Mayorga is a very hard puncher at this point Karl, and I think Vargas was knocked out by a great shot perfectly set up by a way better fighter than Mayorga. Mayorga doesn't seem to have the punch resistance he showed during his welterweight stint. I'd say this fight is a toss up and has the making of a very good fight.

Vargas may have only lost to great fighter in Tito Mosley and DLH but he is beyond shot almost. He has struggled and had his jaw badly broken by fighters he should be walking through.

Mayorga on the other I believe is underrated. Since he burst onto the scene with his kncokout of Lewis, he too has only lost to great fighters in Tito and DLH and closely to sneaky Spinks. He has 2 good wins over Forrest and takes lower level guys out the way that he should. Despite the punishment, I thought Mayorga looked quite dangerous in against Tito and showed that he still has alot left, certainly enough to damage Vargas.

Why you don't talk about Mayorga's fight against DLH? He didn't look like an underated fighter in this one.

the PRE FIGHT SMACKTALK will be GREAT.......maybe better than the fight. Those two might be throwing punches at each other in every press conference...

Vargas needs to leave boxing alone, and stick to making movies with J.Timberlake.

Ferocious has Been Known to Start Shit @ his Press Conferences & Mayorga ALWAYS Gets Under his Opponents Skin @ Press Conferences...That's a VOLATILE Mix...

They'd BETTER have Extra Security for this 1...Cause Mayorga WILL Piss Vargas Off @ Some Point & if FEROCIOUS is CLOSE Enough,he'll SWING on Mayorga...

This should be a fun fight. I just can't see anyway it could be boring.

It's a shame it's out at the left coast, as it would be a fight I'd be willing to go see live.

Now let's hope they stack the undercard.

Yeah, it looks like a pretty good undercard. The best fight on the card is probably Briggs-Garay. I think the winner is definitely deserving of a title shot...Briggs had a very good showing against Adamek in the rematch and, IMO, probably deserved the decision. I've never seen Garay fight before, but I've heard he fought well against Erdei both times (losing by majority and split decisions).
