In their primes, both at their bests.

Vargas would probably try to stay away with his jab and movement but he'd only be succesfull for about 2 or 3 rounds before he gets caught. This goes 4 at the most.

    Jackson KO 3

Man, as much as Vargas liked a punchout..I don't see him lasting through the second, maybe not even the first.

Vargas lasts 4 rounds TOPS. KO 3 sounds about right. Nando usually gets up bravely before getting stopped, but he wouldnt be getting up in this one.

Nando was a higher quality fighter than most of the guys Jackson beat, but i don't think it matters in this matchup.

Vargas has success and looks very good until getting flattened.

Funnily enough Vargas could easily outbox Jackson to a decision if he wanted to but he is too macho for his own good, and eventually would get caught, I think all of you think about the Tito fight too much...he was caught early but he got up...
Anyway I pick Jackson by TKO in round 8.

Vargas went 12 rounds against a prime Tito. It took a pounding from Tito before Vargas was out. I don't think Julian takes him out in 2-3 rounds. I say Julian knocks him the fuck out within 7-8 rounds.

Vargas aint Ray Leonard. He never had great footwork, or defense to outbox Jackson like that. Far slicker boxers than Vargas, in Norris and Graham, got caught by Jackson. Vargas gets flattened no matter what strategy he uses.

I agree! I think Vargas would look good for a few rounds until he gets too macho and gets KTFO....................COLD!

You don't have to be Leonard to outbox Jackson, you just have to not get caught...
I'm not sayin he doesn't lose, but you guys think it will be a mismatch, trust me....Vargas would be winning...before he would be stopped.

How many ppl beat Jackson in his prime? Only McCallum, and G-man. Well, really only McCallum. He did so by taking Julian's best, then battering him. Just cause Jackson was a puncher, doesnt mean he was easy to outbox. Everybody "got caught" by Jackson. McCallum, and G-man just had the chin to take it, and the power to get JJ out. Vargas possesed neither. Jackson was rangy, had fast hands, good technique, and good timing. He'd find Vargas with a bomb early on, even if Nando elected to box. Sure Vargas might be winning, for the whole round and a half before Jackson hits him. Shit, if Tito could catch him in the 1st, its not impossible than Jackson ices him in the first. Jackson was a fast starter.

The odds are that Jackson would win. But we can't discount all of the 1st and 2nd round knock-outs that Vargas had. If he came out guns blazing, he might surprise Jackson, get him hurt on the ropes and finish like he did so many leading up to his fight with Wright.

Also, Vargas seemed to have a sturdy chin and under-rated defense pre-Tito. I really think his chin was cracked for good, without the aid of steroids, following the Trinidad fight. Papa Trinidad sure knew how to wrap those gloves.

Looking back, Tito's father even seemed to have a guilty conscience on his face during the walk-out.

I agree with most of this but I'm not so sure Vargas wouldn't have had the power to get Jackson out of there. McCallum wasn't exactly Rocky Marciano in the punching department and he took Jackson out with one shot. I think Vargas would've definitely had the power to hurt Jackson.

McCallum hurt Jackson and was hammering him against the ropes when the ref stopped it. Julian was buzzed but not totally out of it. Did you mean the McClellan fight?

I think this is just a bad style match up for Vargas.

I wouldn't even say McCellan counts. That came above Jackson's best weight and when he was half-blind.

Nando might have some success boxing, but even then, he wasn't exactly a Locche or Benitez in there. He could show some defensive prowess at times but got caught often enough. When Tito first hurt Vargas, it came simply from countering a jab. When Tito regained momentum of the fight in the 6th, it came when Vargas was boxing on the backfoot. I say Jackson stops him in the first half of the fight.

Vargas did a good job of lasting til the late rounds (and being competitive) with De La Hoya and Trinidad, but there's a difference in power between those 2 and Jackson.

skill wise and talent-wise, Vargas is good enough, but he is not defensively focused enough and at some point he is going to get caught and I just can't see him recovering

You need a better chin or more discipline and speed to beat Jackson
