You could probably identify 80-90% of them by identifying fighters who hold incessantly, but you'd be excluding "runners," in doing so, who like, "holders," don't know how to live in the ring.

Obviously, there's countless. But it's most interesting to talk about fighters who in some cases are even considered elite but who I would say do not know how to "live" in the ring. In other words, they either hold or run because of defensive liabilities, or because they're just plain scared to get hit, or because their entire success depends on their ability to control the pace of the fight which they know no other way to do but to hold.

    1. Hatton comes to mind immediately.
    2. Hopkins.
    3. Malignaggi
    4. Mosley
    5. Guzman
    6. Calzaghe (referee is in his pocket)

Everybody knows your opinion on these matters.

Is this just a reminder, or are there some new posters who signed up that you have tell?

well i think it's a new take on the issue of holding and running - identifying the root cause of why fighters do this. i don't think i'm trying to give you an opinion on, "these matters." i think i'm trying to point out that holding and/or running is simply a symptom of something larger and more fundamental than simply a fighter's preferred tactic. and that the best fighters, fighters who are truely schooled, don't hit and hold or run from their opponent and steal rounds.

so i don't feel as if i'm repeating myself. i think i'm just drilling down a bit.

at least 75% of fights shown on TV are not fought according to the rules, making the sport in my estimation about 1/5th as entertaining as it could be if the rules were actually enforced and with consistency.

You trying to break a record here Double...how many times can you start a thread about the same shit.....?

    but from that list...

Hatton...Ricky is a criminal holding...Hopkins use it strategically...and so did Mosley vs. Margarito beautifully..

Good pick as well. What me and Double are seeing is the truth behind all the smoke and mirrors HBO tries to push in our brain. Like Bernard Hopkins, Ali didn't really know how to behave or how to use proper boxing skills, that's why they resorted to hug and cheat their ways to "victories". If holding wasn't allowed (And me and Double wouldn't put up with that shit if we were running the Boxing Comission, 3 hugs and you're DQ pal!) what I'm saying is, if these boring cheats weren't allowed to hold their ways to boring UD's then you would all realize too that Hopkins, Ali and other supposed greats that I don't like really had no bussiness being prize fighters and chose a wrong career, maybe Hopkins should've kept mugging and Ali should've been a stand up comedian, I don't know. All I know is they just don't know how to live in a ring.

Hopkins could only live in the ring when he fought guys 2 or 3 divisions smaller than himself

Perhaps, but if i know somebody was offended i get extra enjoyment. It just wasn't unexpected.

I thought it was funny, but those things are much better when they come from a poster you never expect doing it.

That hug fest him and Mosley had in that second fight always comes to my mind when I think about fighters who hold. That was the worst display of holding I've ever seen from both of them..

do you think that Fraud would be able to live in the ring if the ref didn't let him twist his back and constantly elbow his opponent in the eyeballs?

Forrest/Mosley II was primarily Mosley's fault.

And watch Ali/Frazier II and tell me Ali, in his later days, wasn't a cheating punk. Nobody should've had to sit through that travesty of a fight.

And I agree about Hopkins. He's comfortable in there as long as he's fighting a welter-weight. But a guy his size? He'll squeeze you like a Boa.

Two guys I think represent the antithesis of these examples, guys who know how to "live" in the ring and are perfect examples are:

    1. Toney
    2. McCallum

It's no surprise their fights against each other were so exciting.

    This Thread is SHIT...

Pretty Much EVERYBODY Can ACKNOWLEDGE that what "Killed" Cotto N the Margarito Fight was his LACK of Clinching...The SAME Can B Said of Tommy Hearns N the 1st Fight w/Ray Leonard...

Like it or Not, Clinching is an EFFECTIVE Way to LIVE/SURVIVE N a Boxing Ring...When U're HURT & a Guy is Moving in for the Kill, CLINCHING is VERY Smart...

REED Dislikes OVERT Clinching as Much as the Next Guy, but it's a NECESSARY Part of Prizefighting...ANY Great Fighter SHOULD have Clinching SOMEWHERE N his Bag of Tricks...

It's Up to the Opposing Corner to RIDE the Ref's Ass Loooooooooooooong Enough to Make him Start PENALIZING the Guy that's Holding...

Bottom Line, Doub...For Every Fighter U're BITCHING about Holding, REED Can Name a Fighter that LOST a Fight Because he DIDN'T Know HOW to Hold Effectively....
