I remember reading about Marc Randazzo way back in the day, and I checked up on him using Boxrec because I remembered that he was expected to take a step up...and then I never heard about the guy again.

Talk about a padded record. They should have called him The Beachcomber because he worked on a lot of deadwood. Out of his 29 wins, only 6 guys had more wins than losses...including his only real title shot against Ralf Rocchigiani.

His last two fights were against guys with the following records: 14-83-2 and 15-51-2. This was a guy who took the easy way up the ladder...well, one step up the ladder anyways.

Randazzo wound up with a final record of 29-1-1. It looks nice on the surface, but when you kick the tires...

I was gonna say Sr or Jr, but there's only one JC Superstar.

I wonder what kind of amateur career Chavez Sr had. He used to spar with Shane Mosley when he was training for Meldrick Taylor the first or second time. They used to call Shane "Little Meldrick".

Found a neat article about tomato cans. I always thought certain fighters were called tomato cans because they were basically target practice for up and comers...and thought the analogy was like shooting cans off a wall for target practice.

According to the Wikipedia article, it was because they leaked tomato juice (blood) and took a pounding. I guess both analogies work.

Hatton seemed to also have a knack for catching guys on the slide when he was coming up through the ranks.

I call a trademark and inventor's mention on that last phrase:

    Cancrusher:
(noun)- a fighter who beats a lot of fighters with losing records in order to build an impressive record which does not hold up well under scrutiny.

The very worst that I can think of is Tyrone Brunson. That cocksucker (and his management, of course) took a very neat record by Valero and put an asterisk next to it by anyone's standard.

Isn't it funny how CanCrushers always seem to have one absolutely HUGE name on their resume? Nielsen has Tyson, Butterbean has Larry Holmes......and Primo Carnera, the original CanCrusher, has at least 5 HoF fighters on his....

Jakubowski is a great call as well. He was something like 80-0 when Julio Cesar Chavez heard about his record and wanted a piece.

I just looked it up as well. When he was 72-1 he fought Reggie Strickland who was 15-86 at the time.

To top it off he rematched him two fights later.

The guys picking Chavez are full of shit... he more than made up for the cans with some great opposition

Martinez, Ramirez, Lockridge, LaPorte, Mayweather, Taylor, Camacho, Castillo, Aguilar, Rosario, Haugen, Alli, etc. .... good names there... he may have fought some nobodies on the way up but man, you cant compare him to the Buck Smiths and Jakubowskis of the world... thats just dishonest hating

Buck Smith said something like "I'm not fighting a bum a month. I'm fighting 3 or 4 bums a month".

I think the winner has to be Don Steele. This heavyweight had a record of 41-0 (41) before getting whupped in two rounds by nobody other than Brian Nielsen:atu:

Steele went on to lose in three rounds against a guy named Richie Melito, who himself had gathered a record of 21-0 (21) before getting hammered in one round by ancient Bert Cooper

One of his KO victims was the guy who played Duke in the Rocky series.
