TBH I agree with him. It's almost sacrilegious to denigrate Ali, but I think Floyd is clearly the better fighter. Head to head, P4P, Floyd would win, and he'd also fare better against common opponents.

He's a cherry picking coward, with a resumé that doesn't match his talent level, unlike Ali, but I think he is better without a doubt.

Floyd has more longevity than Ali had, that doesn't make him better.

The 66-67 Ali was a better fighter than Floyd ever was. And Ali's resume of wins shits on Floyd's.

And P4P Ali would have beaten Floyd. Floyd's edge in skills would be negated by the fact that Ali was a superior physical talent.

Same thing with Jones. Shorter prime than Floyd, because he was more reliant on talent, but at the peak of that talent a better fighter than Floyd.

So no, Floyd is not better than Ali.

If I had to make a top 5 list, of who I think the five BEST fighters of all time were in terms of peak, I'd say (in no order):

    Robinson
    Ali
    Duran
    Leonard
    Jones

All 5 of those fighters in their peaks were superior to Floyd in my mind, and by a pretty good margin.

Whitaker was better than Floyd as well.

Ali fought more good fighters in a couple of years than Floyd's fought in the last 10 ... Neil's right though... In the mainstream, if he does what Neil outlined, he'll be lauded as a sports legend no matter what any of us hardcore boxing fans think about it

TBH I don't see anything Ali does better than Floyd, and I'm not sure he's a significantly superior physical talent to prime Floyd either.

Ali is a historically great fighter, who fought the best of his era, and was not a cherry picking coward, but he is overrated. Even the 66 Ali was borderline flattened by Henry Cooper, and needed to cheat between rounds to recover. Then his fights against Jimmy Young, Norton etc don't exactly look like a guy who is better than Floyd.

And in their first and most important fight, Smokin' Joe busted him up :kidcool:

His win over Big George impresses me more than any other of his wins.

He absolutely did, and that makes him a greater one, but not necessarily a better one.

Prime Floyd had all time elite ability, and still does really. To me, he's just the clearly better more effective fighter, if not historically greater one.

In terms of speed and athleticism, Ali and Jones were the two most unnatural freaks we've seen.

Floyd was EXTREMELY physically gifted, don't get me wrong, but what's made him so good is that talent COMBINED with his great skill and mind.

If we're talking about him purely as a physical talent, no he doesn't compare to Ali.

Ali P4P had better handspeed and footspeed, better power, and AS good reflexes.

A fucking fragile dimwit like Zab Judah gave prime Floyd a lot of problems with his physical talent.

You think Ali wouldn't do better?

A washed up DLH was beating Floyd because of his jab until his infamously shitty stamina failed him.

Picture Floyd trying to cope with Ali's jab, P4P.

Zab Judah had explosive handspeed and power, and is a southpaw. More comparable to Tyson in the physical talent stakes. Ali's speed was pitty pat stuff. His power shots were nowhere near as fast as Tyson's or Judah's.

Ali was great to watch, very graceful and light on his feet as a heavyweight, but his results don't really match his talent level. He wasn't as absurdly dominant as Floyd.

I could just as easily say Henry Cooper gave Ali a lot of problems, or Jimmy Young, or Ken Norton, etc etc, you think Floyd wouldn't do better?

Ali routinely lost rounds to fairly average fighters too, I just don't see this amazing, unbeatable fighter that gets routinely talked about. Floyd and Roy were far more dominant.

Roy would beat Ali head to head too, if you want to talk about physical talent, Roy is it, he's someone who really would have a physical talrnt advantage over Floyd.

True, but in the same vein, given how he struggled with Norton and especially Young, how do you picture him coping with Floyd's superb defense, and overall skill and trickiness and excellent counterpunching?

Now THIS is a different story.

90's Jones was possibly the best fighter to ever lace em up.

A lot of what Floyd does can be offset by a guy with extreme physical talent.

And Ali as a pitty patter is complete HORSESHIT! The man scored far too many stoppages to accuse him of pitty patting.

I think Floyd's shoulder rolling would be offset by Ali's jab and edge in handspeed. He broke Judah's fragile ass down, but Ali could fight at a high pace all night.

Yeah Floyd ain't better than Ali. Not OVERALL. Maybe he had better FUNDAMENTAL SKILL, but Ali's talent was indeed superior. Faster, more athletic. He also beat better guys. Floyd has beaten some decent guys, but he's had more than enough trouble to let me know that p4p he's not better than Ali. Not even at his best. A fighter like Castillo does not win arguably BEAT Ali like he arguably beat Floyd. And this was Floyd in his prime.

Don't really see it... I think he's been in the right place at the right time for a good decade ... Ali looked amazing against third rate opponents too ... I think Floyd is an ATG Lightweight/Junior Lightweight fighter and a decent welterweight capitalizing on a terrible era ... He's not really anything near great at the weight and I'd have to imagine his time there is being factored into this claim of his... How great would Ali have looked into his 30s if his opponents were all Mac Foster level? And if he could get them to weigh only a certain amount and use a specific type of glove and a specific size ring? The difference in comp here is enormous ... It's a lot harder to look great every time out when your opponent is good ...

Yeah, it doesn't bother me. To be as good as Floyd is at boxing, you need some level of irrational self-belief.

The Version of Ali that Beat Liston for the Title and Defended it 9 Times ('64-'67) is BETTER than Any Version of Floyd Mayweather that Ever Lived...

For Starters Ali was Undefeated in 28-29 Fights, w/22-23 KO's, Demonstrating a Level of Power that ESCAPED Floyd...Ali was just a More GIFTED Athlete than Floyd, Across the Board...Footwork, Handspeed, Jab, Unorthodoxy, Reflexes & More of a Killer Instinct than Floyd Dared to Show...

Floyd is a "By the Book" Fighter, Whereas Ali was Truly INNOVATIVE...More than 40 Years After the Fact, there Still HASN'T been a Heavyweight that Fought Quite like Ali Did, Though Many have Tried...

Ali's Resume SHITS on Floyds...If Margarita Hovered Around Ali's Weight Class, he'd have Undoubtedly FOUGHT him...If Pacquiao was in his Range, it WOULDN'T have Taken Ali 5-6 Years to Face him..."Better", "Greater", However you Choose to Slice It, Floyd Really COULDN'T Carry Ali's Jockstrap...

    This! Every word of this.

Floyd's edges over Ali are better longevity and better technical skills (minus Ali's piston jab, which Floyd never had).

Those edges are negated by the fact that Ali had a far superior resume, and at his peak was simply a more dynamic and talented/better fighter.

Ali was fast for a heavyweight. Nothing more, nothing less.

Duran would beaten the fuck outta Floyd.

To be honest with you, I was NEVER a fan of "Money" Mayweather.

I was a fan of "Pretty Boy" Floyd.

I hope Pac lays this pos out. He'll lose though, which will further convince the mainstream and that Floyd's the best, which he never will be.
