For this MM assume neither is dying of Typhoid Fever, Tuberculoisis and Diptheria or suffering even mild effects of Dysentery.

I'm not saying Driscoll doesn't win but i don't know if he takes him out that early.

Good point. Driscoll wasn't known to be a particularly fast starter. He liked to feel out an opponent for a few hundred rounds...

Driscoll did, however, KO Boxcar Bridgedweller and Gunboat Chase in the 83rd round, so he was not incapable of a fast-start.

Most accounts of Driscoll make mention of his pre-breakfast mountaineering rituals, in which he often base-camped at several hundred metres above sea-level. Little wonder he had such a penchant for the late rounds, but Im not sure he could handle the legend of Maces brute strength at close-quarters wrestled his way to knockout victories over all manner of circus animals --- from lions to bears and even juvenile elephants. He was mighty strong and plenty tough, with grit to spare.

I think Mace gets it done by the eyes of most, but the Newspaper Decision goes against him.

    Both would beat Ken Norton.

I dunno who would win between the two but I agree that they would both beat Ken Norton. Technique aside, just look at their physiques and how much better they are than Norton's.

It isnt about physiques, its about mindsets. How do you suppose fighters then grew such superior mustaches? Sleeping in junkyards, riding the rails, fighting in bars for nickels. These were the magic ingredients responsible for the wonder moes of yesteryear. Norton never stood a chance. Just coming face-to-face with such facial hair at the staredown would have done him in mentally. Napoleon Hill, eat your heart out.

Mace would bash Driscoll with his right hand while thrashing him good and plenty with his left... Driscoll will die of the consumption soon thereafter

    Read the first post again.

For this MM assume neither is dying of Typhoid Fever, Tuberculoisis and Diptheria or suffering even mild effects of Dysentery.

Yes i know it's a bit like asking "assume Pernell Whitaker wasn't a southpaw" but i want to match these guys at or near their best.

Napoles was prone to cuts, "Black Saddle" McGrungsy was troubled with starvation.

I'd just like to match these guys based upon skills and abilities.

    no no no

    you misunderstand

I am not saying Driscoll has the consumption going into the contest

I am saying Mace would literally infect him with it by way of his mighty blows!

This matchup is giving me a raging boner. It's that good!

Whiskey, you know how I regard Driscoll. I rarely go against him in this forum. Fabulous fighter. Still, I'm not so sure he'd be able to deal with the sofistication, badge of courage or downright truculence of Gem Mace.

Give me Driscoll sometime after the 162nd round. I say this with little confidence.

    Surely, thou doth jest?

The great Gypsy would bid a fine "Adieu" to Squire Driscoll with a preponderance of scientific blows!

Would he then feast upon the flesh of his vanquished foe like a savage does feast???

NAY, he is a noble artisit of the prize ring

A man who boxed with skill & daring, with cunning, & craft.

I must admit, I do enjoy reading from time-to-time the old newspaper accounts of fights. I find the style of writing much neater & more correctly-phrased & worded than contemporary use of the language, as well as interesting in its own right.
