How would they fare against one another? I have my own thoughts on this fight, but I would like to gauge the forum initially. I think it's a cracking affair.
:atu: For some reason, I fancy Moore, thought it doesn't make sense to me...he was stopped by Marciano and Patterson, though he was an old man by then. His punch was good...but it is unlikely to have been any better than Dempseys. Close, close fight. Both guys seem perfectly capable of taking the other guys punch, and both guys knew how to fight. It could swing on who was the most active...Tunney might be too cerebral.
Have probably seen 4 of Moores in large parts- Durelle, Marciano, Patterson, Ali, from which I have concluded that he could punch and take a punch but did not have the tightest defence and that his "prime" must be regarded as having come before these fights....thus increasing his reputation quite considerably. There is also footage out there of the Maxim and Pompey fights.....Maxim was a bit like Tunney in terms of style- upright, boxer more than puncher.... As for Tunney....the 2nd Dempsey fight is easily obtained, which is pertinent- Dempsey was a bigger puncher than Moore. The Tom Heeney fight is out there, as is Tommy Gibbons. If we had footage from the Greb fights...we might be in more of a position to call it.
I've seen the same as you, then. Just don't consider it enough to have a useful opinion - most the fights we've seen were at heavyweight for one thing. Provisionally I'd lean towards Tunney but with the clear disclaimer that I don't really have a clue here.
