I'm talking about guys who were either champions or top contenders at some point who just got dropped more than they should have. Sometimes getting dinged by non-discript talent. Junior Jones is one, and his conditioning was pretty suspect. Joe Louis was knocked down a few times. Two Ton Tony wasn't quite world class. I want to put Archie Moore in there, but he just had so many fights he was bound to get dinged from time to time. For the record, Antonio Tarver as an amateur. I don't know what his deal was. Ironically, as a pro, he rarely goes down!
People will say Hearns, but I don't think he qualifies as having a "weak chin." Terry Norris Lennox Lewis
Lewis and Wlad both had reputations for having weak chins, reputations neither fully deserved. I actually believe, for what it is worth, that Gatti had a less than stellar chin.
How many times did you see him take a solid shot from a puncher and not get wobbled at the least? Rahman and McCall put him out COLD with single shots. I don't think Joe Louis qualifies either, Galento might've been a fat slob, but he could crack and he dropped Louis with a nice shot. Louis got up, though.
Well he was caught flush and got ko'ed but at the same time those were the only two times he went down. Mercer,Briggs,Bruno,Holyfield and bunch of others put leather on him hard and he didn't go anywhere. His chin was okay.
Wlad has a bad chin indeed but his heart is unquestionable. He gets dropped but always gets up for more.
Disagreed on Hearns. Obviously it wasn't as bad as often exaggerated but if there was any chank in Tommy's armour it was his chin. Not glass, but it was 'weak'.
Yet Wlad has never been counted out. Lewis has. Wlads problem is one of composure rather than constitution.
Yeah, Ray Mercer landed some heavy joints on Lewis and he hung in there. I did, however, believe he lost that fight. Frank Bruno also had Lennox battered for a bit but Lennox hung in there and won.
That's true, however Wlad is a professional boxer. He's not somebody like Brock Lesnar who's isn't used to getting hit. If he had a strong chin he wouldn't react the way he does getting hit with his level of experience.
Gatti's chin was weird. He was easy to initially hurt or drop but then it's like it woke him up and his chin became better after that. I know he had a lot of heart, but determination can only get you so far when you're getting punched in the face. Could you say the same for Frank Bruno? He'd have the ability to usually stay on his feet after bombs, but wouldn't keep his composure after getting tagged hard.
He was definitely vulnerable but much more durable once he went up to 135. He could be hurt, for sure.
His punch was. I think Louis' chin sometimes gets a worse rap than it deserves. He clearly shakes off one or two of Max Baer's rights before polishing him off. His chin took an awful lot to come undone against Max Schmeling's formidable right hand. Some of Louis' knockdowns were balance-related...but on the other hand, he's clearly wobbled by Conn & hurt a few other times he shouldn't be. Even so, I think sometimes you have to look at the fighter getting up, not just being knocked down. Louis didn't seem remotely hurt in knockdowns with Braddock or even Galento, who did have a world-class hook.
terry norris is the best example of this, imo. I think Lennox qualifies too.. not glass but i think it was his weakest attribute and it affected the way he fought because he knew it. Julian Jackson? Felix Trinidad? how about Roy Jones? :stir:
Seriously. :: Irish is on a roll... Wlad has a strong chin, and Vitali-Sanders was a better fight than Trinidad-Vargas!!!1
Who said that??? Is there another "Irish" on this forum? Where did I say these things? Take a break man, you don't have to be Canadian every day of your life!!!
If Roy Jones' Chin was "Weak", then he's EASILY the Greatest Defensive Fighter EVER...How Else Can a Guy Go 14 Years or More (Basically UNDEFEATED), Tasting the Canvas a Grand Total of 1 Time, w/a "Weak" Chin???...While Roy's Chin Wasn't SPECIAL, it Wasn't "Weak" Either... Toney had Knockout Power when he Needed It...Ditto for Reggie Johnson...Merqui Sosa was a LEGIT Banger...All of them Hit Roy FLUSH & NATHAN Happened...Lou Del Valle Could Crack a Bit & he Dropped Roy yet Lost EVERY SECOND of Every Other Round...ANY Fighter that GIVES AWAY 33 lbs to his Opponent will FEEL That Opponents Power...Nonetheless, John Ruiz Hit Roy FLUSH a Handful of Times (In the 1st Couple Rounds of their Bout), but Never Hurt Him...Roy Wasn't Jake LaMotta, but he Wasn't Junior Jones Either...
