Is it anything more than a prime champion feasting on a pass prime legend to generate interest from casual fans like me? In other words does Gracie has a chance to win?
I really don't think so. Gracie is too old at this point, and the game has evolved to the point that he will be facing a guy who is verry well rounded and incredibly strong. Matt Hughes is probably as strong and more well rounded than any of the guys that Gracie defeated, even though Royce was used to facing dudes much larger. The guys back then were very one dimensional. If the fight goes to the ground,...and I think it will...I think that Royce has a slight chance because of his background. But I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Hughes KO him on his feet.
Hughes is no retard on the ground. Personally I think GRacie's only chance is to somehow sweep Hughes and get top position and thats damn near impossible. Gracie ain't taking Hughes down and his gaurd isn't strong enough to take 25 minutes of beat down. His face will be mince.
I think people get a little caught up in the idea that Royce's juijistu is this unbelievalbe force that no one can conquer. The simple fact is Royce was so great at what he did becuase no one else practiced what he did to anywhere near the level that he did. Nowadays, I'd venture to say that there are quite a few guys on Royce's level on the ground. He's got the small shot at Matt fucking up, as Matt has been choked a few times before, but I really doubt it.
I understand that ELMO,..I was just saying that I wouldn't be surprised to see Hughes KO him before it even GETS to the ground. DUH!!
and I'm just saying I would.....Royce wont stand that long....He'll fall to his back if he feels pressured.....DUH
BJ is a rediculous athlete, Royce is not....BJ is very dangerous on his feet, Royce is not....BJ is a complete fighter, Royce is not Royce has a better chance at looking at the Dennis Halman wins as a source of inspiration than the Penn victory.... In any case, Hughes is a better fighter now than he has been at any point in his career
I doubt it, Hooks. Matt Hughes always looks vulnerable to me. I don't think he's any different whatsoever from that humiliating night when Penn made him tap. I like your argument though, Royce is not, at this stage especially, on the level of a BJ Penn in any area. But I doubt it will be an easy fight for Hughes. I'm looking at the Royce/Yoshida rematch from a couple years back and Gracie looks pretty damn good for a guy considered shot. But that was special rules. I just think Royce does have a decent chance, but I guess we're gonna find out in just a few days. :holla:
Dan Severn was good so was Shamrock they invented rules for shamrock to be competitve with gracie in their second fight i dont think Hughes could have ever beaten either anyhow Gracie is a better at subs then hughes is...thats one advantage that he has Gracie in an "upset"
Severn wasnt that good.....he failed to evolve and the sport left him behind, big time....Its just that he was one of the first championship class athletes to come along in the UFC, with his wrestling background
You don't think Hughes could have beaten Shamrock? Well bravo genius. Ones a welterweight and the other is a heavyweight. Anyone who picks Gracie should kill themselves. He dies.
dude thats my point...gracie doesnt get credit for beating some huge motherfuckers Kimo, Shamrock, and Severn fourhooks..the game has evolved but severn was still good dude..he still beat shamrock himself man..severn knew submission..he was just a shitty striker
gracie is an overrated clown. He should have lost the re vs shamrock , and I heard he should have lost against tokoro as well (stupid no decision rules). He's also incredibly boring to watch. Any good striker would#will carve him up, and his sub game is also overated
he beat shamrock...HA, go watch that crap fight...that was nothing....SUBMISSION?????? you're fucking crazy....he got a guy with a rear naked and another guy with a straight arm choke....those arent submissions, those are basic instints...and who did he get them on? No one who knew submissions....why dont you pull up severns fight finder page and look and some of the guys he lost to.... He is soooooo fucking overrated it isnt funny.....The only thing Severn did was win at the oportune time, and perform a highlight reel suplex on a kid who weighed 90 lbs less than he did
A little known fact is that they changed the rules a few hours before the Severn v Shamrock rematch and outlawed the closed fist punch, effectively taking away one of Shamrock's major weapons against the wrestler. Severn is and will always be nothing more than a strong guy with good wrestling skills. He'd have been obliterated in a true MMA contest against ...well, shit, I'd take Dan Bobish over that asshole.
dan severn,:jester: I rebember the guy was slapping on the ground instead of punching, cause he didn't want to hurt his little hands:jester:
i did...keep in mind severn was an old man by the time he even began this whole mixed martial art stuff..his record aint bad either fourhooks..take a look at it.....I was suprised to see a win over Forrest Griffin...anyhow you think this current version of matt hughes could beat Dan Severn from the original UFC's?
first, i'll handle this...NO, Hughes was too small, and his strength is the same as Severns, thereby negating any Hughes advantage Now, if you saw the second Shamrock fight, which you are referring to, then surely you did not see the entire fight, because no one in the history of the world made it through that awake.....If you watched the first fight, you would have seen Severn choked by Shamrock, and you would have also seen Ken more than holding his own in the wrestling portion of the fight...As far as Severns age....so what, coture, lidell, saku, whoever, age is no excuse...... His record isnt good either, its padded as hell and he has draws and losses to much much smaller fighters.....Why would you be surprised to see a win over Forrest??? Forrest isnt a stud, and he wasnt half as good then as he is now....its not like Dan got Forrest out of there either, its just that he laid on him through the fight.... Face it bro, Dan isnt NEARLY as good as you said he was.....His subs definetely arent ANYWEAR NEAR what you say they are....Like I said, his only claims to fame are winning at the right time, the suplex's on Macias, and being the first real wrestler to come into the UFC and win some fights, and maybe even help to bring about the GNP now go make me a pie
