Who would you say fits this? Floyd is the first that comes to mind for me. Maybe Tyson as well but the Ruddock fights were quite exciting I suppose.

Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones were in some good fights, can't really think of any that were great.

Their head to head was dreadful.

McGirt's thrashing of Frankie Warren in the rematch was a very good fight.

Whitaker did have entertaining fights though, even being one sided.

Even against Trinidad, out for 2 years, strung out on coke, giving up 9 years in age, 5 inches in height and at a huge power disadvantage, he stood RIGHT IN FRONT of Trinidad, banged on the inside with him, and in taking a beating that resulted in a broken jaw, reminded everyone that beneath his skill was a rugged, mean fighter.

    Miss that guy.

Wow..........Bob Foster? Did he have many thrillers? Most of his fights were very controlled precision events. They weren't thrillers or manic affairs.

Would you count Michael Spinks-Yaqui Lopez as a great fight?

I can’t think of any other Spinks fights that would qualify.

If Tyson-Ruddock 2 is not a great fight, then nothing is...

You know I thought of Spinks....I think his fights with Homes would, retrospectively, be classedcas "Great fights"

The first Benvenuti fight was a war. I believe it won FOTY.

That's true. There were a few FOTY winners that were clearly based upon "relevance" rather than quality of the match itself. I don't think Monzon-Benvenuti fits that particular category though.

It's also based on calendar year. When you look at the options for the time, some years simply don't have as many contenders as others. (in other categories as well)

I haven't seen it myself so maybe someone else can confirm, but was the Ahumada bout a great fight? I just assume to fight LHW Foster to a draw, even if it was his last title defence... well surely it must have at least been a good scrap?

I really like the Chavez and Corley fights too. Very fun to watch IMO. If one sided.

That fight was pretty average, though. Just far more competitive than anyone else Foster was in with.

That was a FOTY for 1972, although there were probably better deserving winners that year. As George says, it actually was a decent rather than an outright great fight.

I think Michael Spinks is an excellent shout. The Lopez fight was probably the most entertaining of his I’ve seen but I probably wouldn’t call it ‘great’.

Im a huge qawi fan, and i guess its arguable to call him a great, but while he was consistently exciting, i don't recall him being in a great fight
