Good one, Joan. http://www.fightnews.com/fightnews_2/headlines//EkkEkyEluVWFqivFTR.html At today's weigh-in in Biloxi, IBF/WBA/WBO lightweight Nate Campbell originally weighed 135.2 pounds, then made the 135-pound limit even just thity minutes later. Challenger Joan Guzman was originally 138.5 pounds and has two hours to take off 3.5 pounds. Stay tuned. In the other title fight, WBC 140lb champ Tim Bradley was originally 140.3 and made 139.8 an hour later. Challenger Edner Cherry weighed 139.2 on the first try.
How much over the limit can a fighter be and then be allowed to make? When Castillo was overweight, he was only allowed to lose 2 lbs by the commission.
his whole team should be fired! All that work and even if he beats Nate he still won't bet the belts?? What a bunch of fucking retards!!! Cupey
Yeah, Guzman is to blame too, but he can't fire himself. If he's the only one to blame, he's not serious enough.
It's the responsibility of the team to monitor your weight as well. They knew how much he weighed last week, a few days ago. They fucked up. Cupey
Floyd senior is blaming David Bue, the nutritionist who has worked with Guzman for 2-years, for this disaster. cupey
I'm not one bit suprised. I heard the rumors three weeks ago and kept them off the forum because of what happend last time. Happy with my +256 bet I got on Campbell a week ago.
I like guzman and respect his ability but its hard to defend the guy. he continues to go up weight divisions and still has this problem, he is unprofessional.
Monitor all you want. Weight is the responsibility of the fighter and not really anyone else. There is nothing magical about making weight. You either do it or you don't.
How do you propose a team can make a fighter lose weight? Sure, you do things that help, i.e. hiring a dietitian and whatnot, but the responsibility is the fighter's. Just like you don't blame parents when their 18 year old kid goes off and kills someone.
HAVE YOU EVER STEPPED INTO THE RING BROTHER! I SPARRED WITH ELVIS! :fightme: hahahahahaha. Mike you are being ridiculous You have a nutrionist on your team that monitors your weight and tells you what foods to eat. you know the target weight and you know what he has to weigh by a certain day. Do you want me to call Mackie Shillstone to explain it to you?
and who says they didn't? People gain weight by eating and lose it by living. The fighter knows how hard it is to lose weight and knows how much he eats. It's on him.
Guzman eats a lot of bad food and blows up between fights. This isn't news. Its not that he doesn't train hard...he just does stupid things before he gets that far. This isnt the first time this has happened to him and it won't be the last.
I'm probably the biggest Guzman apologist on this board - hell, if not in the media as well - but there's really no defending him. He walks around at least in the 150's, but had plenty of time to get to 135. Moving up a division per year, there's no excuse to consistently miss weight the way he has, even as inactive as he's been. The irony is that for all of the fuss made about the MS commission fueding w/ the sanctioning bodies and eventually kissing and making up w/ all but the WBC is now all for naught, as it's a non-title fight anyway.
to guys who's already won a title or two especially in multiple divisions, it seems as though belts dont mean much anymore. guzman has been known to have weight difficulties, but it's a bit surprising since this is his lightweight debut.
He is schooling nobody, because he already cheated. Guzman can only walk away with a tainted win and I hope no BS network gives him another fight for pulling this crap AGAIN.
how did he cheat? how do you know he did it on purpose? what would be the point? Guzman doesn't benefit from not making weight especially when he is the one coming from a lower weight class. He doesn't rely on power like Castillo did against Corrales. He is a slick boxer and the lighter he is the better. Guzman fucked himself by not making the best of this oportunity. But weather he schools Campbell or not it won't be because he is 135 or 138.5 It will be because he is a better fighter period.
.... Sorry but no. Anytime 1 guy has to drain himself down to make weight while the other doesn't that puts the guy who don't make weight at an advantage. In this case that is Guzman. Weight classes are there for a reason.
