Good fight. Hagler took some hard shots but jabbed Mugabi silly, then ripped him up close later in the fight.
Mugabi was one of my favorite fighters as a kid. This fight destroyed me. Great fight to rewatch though.
Hagler was a much bigger fighter than Mugabi. "The Beast" was a tiny Middleweight. Just look at the two of them in the ring.
Even though small, it solidified the belief in Hagler's ridiculous chin. My man has been blasted with some good stuff & was never really in trouble. Like someone said before, it's a fight with pretty good replay value...
The drama of this fight back when it happened was unreal. Everyone knew Hagler had a granite chin, but going in, we also knew Mugabi clubbed everyone into submission. Hagler chin and unwavering confidence were better than Mugabi's power. Another cool point of this fight was Gil Clancy. This fight is a perfect example of Gil's ability to analyze a matchup and relay it to the viewer. How many times did you hear "Now Hagler is making him reach" followed by Mugabi missing short and Hagler tagging him with a counter; or "Mugabi is trying to set him up for the right uppercut..." immediately followed by Mugabi dipping and unleashing a huge right uppercut. No one compares to Gil Clancy among former boxers or trainers making the transition to broadcaster.
A little known fact, the Mugabi-Hagler bout was Showtime's first boxing broadcast. Unfortunately we didn't have Showtime back then and I had to watch it weeks later on ABC Wide World of Sports, but at least I got to tape it..
