Former BBC boxing commentator Harry Carpenter has died at the age of 84. Carpenter was the BBC's voice of boxing for almost half a century after joining the corporation in 1949, when he first began commentating on the sport. Known for his double act with British boxing great Frank Bruno, Carpenter also presented Sportsnight, Grandstand and Sports Personality of the Year... http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/front_page/8580058.stm RIP MTF
Yeah I bought his and Reg Gutteridges tape back in 1999....that was the first time I saw Hagler-Hearns in all its glory. He was quite old-fashioned but I preferred him to the twats we have today. I cannot see anyone giving a toss when Adam Smith dies. RIP.
He was one of these white brits that clung on Ali's every word and laughed and rolled over when Ali cracked jokes. Like I said, a bit old fashioned, a harmless boring sort of a guy who fit right in with the staid old BBC. He would have been totally removed from today's roaring and screaming and hype. In fact, he probably did not understand all the hype over shite fighters who would have not even made tea-boys for some of the champions he witnessed down the years.
classic carpenter with tyson talking about all the previous heavyweight champions <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/orxmkDJ_o3U&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/orxmkDJ_o3U&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1dGf4YdiNgQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1dGf4YdiNgQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/g1BwfSOuw_c&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/g1BwfSOuw_c&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RpS-gj2qU24&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RpS-gj2qU24&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ot7lbQYl4jA&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ot7lbQYl4jA&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/TnRDdmKIVh4&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/TnRDdmKIVh4&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
Let's be honest..British comentators tend to be boring. Ian Darke is BY FAR the best British Boxing commentator in history but before him we had no choice by to endure the like of Harry Carpenter and...God help us..Reg Gutteridge.
That was a great way to spend an hour, thanks for posting. Tyson really knows his boxing history backwards and forwards.
I liked Harry a lot. His call of Carlos Palomino vs. Stracey and Green were very dramatic and colorful, and he covered Alan Minter and Ali very well. His call of Ali-Mildenberger was classic, and he ended it with the classic.."Muhammad Ali, Champion of the World." And that was at a time when very few, if any, other broadcasters besides Cosell referred to him by his Muslim name. Rest in Peace, Harry. Karl
Truth. Darke is one of the best ever, anywhere, Smith tries so hard to be diet Darke and just fails. RIP Carpenter though
