I was watching the 24/7 and it was mentioned that he never won a big fight. Does vargas and Chavez count?

    Trinidad, Hopkins, Mosely 2x.

if had KOed Quartey in the 12th, that would've been his most impressive win.

his best wins are over Chavez and Vargas.

    Agreed.

I would rank the Ruelas win up there too.

What about Mosely 2 or Whitaker who was P4P #1 when DLH fought him ..

that's B.S. to build up the fight - that he hasn't won the big one. he's won many big fights. he's lost some too. that's how great careers go. the undefeated record is almost entirely a fabrication made possible by HBO.

yeah, because the Hurtado and first Rivera fights didn't exist.

I think it's one of Oscar's better wins, but Whitaker p4p #1? No fucking way.

... after the fact. Going in, his chin was as much of a liability as his power was an asset. And Oscar had been put on his ass a few times going into the fight, which made Ruelas' power a perceived equalizer.

At the time, it was a very impressive win, and a big step up, for Oscar. More impressive than any other win he had that year.

what i wonder about is whether or not it was fair of Shane Mosley to characterize PBF's win over Corrales the way he did. Basically, he made it out to be insignificant considering how weight drained and ill-prepared Corrales was. does anyone agree with this?

Yes it was fair ... Doesn't matter anyway , a fully prepared corrales is not an elite fighter regardless ..

Yeah, but sometimes HBO commentators don't know what they're saying.

The magazines around that time had Whitaker up there on the p4p scale, but below Roy (who got DQ'd about a month before DLH-Whitaker) and Oscar.

Sure...it was HBO, what do you expect?

No one really believed it. Oh, there is that contingent that ignores reality and just looks at wins as wins and doesn't take into account how good someone actually is when ranking them. But why use that nonsense to bolster the win, though?

Hell, Whitaker wasn't even the favorite in the fight, was he?

Not sure if he was a favorite ... I was just telling you what the fight build up labeled Pea as ....

I'm assuming that he was at minimum up there on the p4p list ..

I think Shane was just using a little gamesmanship. Trying to get under Floyd's skin a little. Corrales might have been weight drained but he wasn't ill prepared and as much as I like Diego, Mayweather would have beat that ass either way.

2-1 underdog, if I remember correctly. May have been 3-1.

Does getting robbed count or are we just talking about the W?

Also I would classify Vargas as somewhat a big fight. Many thought vargas was going to manhandle Oscar.

I think the biggest fights in Oscar's mind were Chavez and Vargas. By far the two most personal big fights to him. The biggest fight for his legacy would have been Hop. If he beat Hop, we would be talking about it still. The fact he lost didn't do anything because he was supposed to. The biggest fight he lost was Tito. We can debate all day who won. But when fans watched him run for the last three rounds, it did a number on his reputation. If he finishes that fight strong and beats Tito, we talk of Oscar differently today.

I was going by the official decision.

If we're not, then take away my mention of Quartey and replace it with Trinidad.

For the most part yeah. I've always said i wished that fight ended in a draw as neither guy deserved to have their hand help afterward.

Even with the exaggerated running at the end of the fight ... I always felt DLH did more than enough to win that one.

The only glory Trinidad fans had for that fight was DLH's dancing for the last 3 rounds ... other than that Oscar gave him a boxing lesson IMO.

Quartey was IMO a good decision. Oscar did all the damage in that fight and Finished in style to win the close fight.

whitaker was past his prime, but it would've been a great win had oscar won the fight decisively.
